Our employees like Kristi Gienger make quotes like that possible. As a Licensed Addictions Counselor, Kristi is a wonderful asset to the team at the Avera Addiction Care Center.
Part of her role is to work with the specialty court programs by providing counseling to the clients; they discuss topics such as Relapse Prevention and Recovery Maintenance. Kristi feels that the longevity and consistency of the specialty courts programs is what makes them so beneficial.

Beginning Monday, we are temporarily closing our Groton clinic for in-person appointments. However, patients still call the clinic for telemedicine.
The Ellendale clinic will continue to operate with limited staff and hours.
Again, these changes are temporary and Avera looks forward to serving these communities again soon.

Read the entire press release below:
As the region continues to see an increase in patients with COVID-19, Avera St. Luke’s is taking additional measures in its surge plan. This includes temporarily closing the Avera Medical Group Groton and having limited hours at Avera Clinic of Ellendale as of Monday, November 23.
Temporarily closing the Groton clinic and moving to limited hours in Ellendale allows Avera to redeploy the clinics’ staff to areas of greater need, which includes Avera St. Luke’s in Aberdeen.
“We believe having access to rural health care is incredibly important, and we are committed to continuing to serve these towns in the future,” said Todd Forkel, President and CEO of Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.
Patients of these facilities and community residents should still seek medical care when necessary. Our clinics in Aberdeen are open and safe to visit. Avera also continues to offer virtual care.
The public can help slow the spread of COVID-19 and lessen the surge of patients by practicing good hygiene, social distancing and wearing masks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has affirmed that wearing masks can help communities slow the spread of COVID-19 when worn consistently and correctly by a majority of people in public settings. Masks are most effective when used along with other preventive measures, including social distancing, frequent handwashing, and cleaning and disinfecting.
Our Deck The Halls virtual ends this Saturday, with the proceeds going to the Avera Cancer Institute. Although the pandemic has hampered how the Avera St. Luke's Foundation has been able to reach out to the community, it won’t stop them from continuing to try.
“You can’t stop cancer. Not yet anyway. That’d be great when we can. But until then, we’ve got to do our best to support and carry out the mission of Avera. Which is helping a patient in any aspect that we can.” - Amy Blackstone, Regional Foundation Directoria

At this time, most people will not receive the vaccine for weeks or months, depending on age and risk factors.
People with underlying medical conditions, those 65 years and older and a few other select people can expect to tentatively receive the vaccine as early as February. However, this is highly dependent on the continued production, availability and delivery of the vaccines.
Avera will be communicating with the public WHEN the vaccine becomes available. While a few patients may be contacted directly, most will be notified through avera.org as well as media/news releases and social posts.

Q: If you or your loved one has had COVID-19, do you/he/she still need a vaccination?
A: YES! Avera is recommending that everyone get the COVID-19 vaccine, regardless of whether they have recovered from a previous COVID-19 infection. According to the CDC, there is not enough information currently available to say if or for how long after infection someone is protected from getting COVID-19 again; this is called natural immunity. Early evidence suggests natural immunity from COVID-19 may not last very long, but more studies are needed to better understand this.

She is spending a portion of her first days here meeting members of our team and learning more about our facilities. With more than 25 years of experience in the health care field, she comes to Marshall from Aberdeen, SD where she worked in operations at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital. Welcome, Debbie!

UPDATE: Beginning next week, those 75 and older will be eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. This 1D phase also includes people receiving care for cancer, transplant and dialysis. Avera patients in this group are being contacted to set up vaccine appointments. Vaccination is by appointment only.
The public can also go to Avera.org/covid-vaccine to fill out an online vaccine form. Those who are not in qualifying groups right now can sign up to be put on a waiting list, or can continue to watch for updates on the vaccine web page.
Those who do not have internet access can call 1-877-AT-AVERA (1-877-282-8372). Avera asks that people call only if they do not have access to internet as fielding a large amount of calls will limit the hotline’s ability to schedule those at-risk people in 1D who are now designated for the vaccine. If you are in 1D and currently eligible to be scheduled, you may also call the hotline to do so.

"For everything there is a season, A time for every activity under heaven." - Ecclesiastes 3:1
Early this spring, Avera St. Luke’s will begin to decommission Lourdes Hall, including the archway that connects the historical building to the main hospital, and the former Northeastern Mental Health buildings that are within Avera St. Luke’s main campus.
“We are carefully recognizing the heritage of this building while continuing on with our master campus planning,” said Todd Forkel, Regional President and CEO. “The building was first moved to campus because Avera St. Luke’s was growing, as were the care and services the hospital offered. Avera’s goal has always been to meet the need of the day, and the demolition of these buildings will help to ensure that we are always able to do that.”
The State of South Dakota has opened up COVID-19 vaccination to teachers beginning yesterday, March 8. Avera can now begin scheduling K-12, pre-K, and college faculty and staff, as well as child care providers.
Avera is working with school districts to provide education faculty and staff with access to schedule their vaccine.
Vaccine availability to different age groups will vary community-by-community, based on the age makeup of the community, and interest in the vaccine. South Dakotans in this group who have not already completed a waiting list request are encouraged to visit Avera.org/covid-vaccine to learn more.
Individuals who qualify under previous phases, such as medical workers, long term care residents, active cancer patients, dialysis patients, solid organ transplant patients, those over 65, and people with one qualifying chronic condition can also join Avera’s wait list.
Avera will continue to reach out to eligible patients, as supplies of vaccine allow.

“This is a way to thank the public for everything they’ve done with masking, social distancing, getting vaccinated when it’s offered to them. But we also want to reinforce that this isn’t over.
