Get your kicks on Route 66 with Avery Place! Over the next four months our residents and staff will be "roadtripping" along the "Main Street of America" by participating in a walking club, listening to music from the era, playing trivia, visiting roadside attractions, sharing stories, and enjoying recipes from famous diners along the way, from Chicago to L.A. Join us on our journey by following #EnlivantRoute66.
Avery Place would like to send a special "thank you" to these three - Gene, Diane, and Jane - for not only volunteering their time over these years, but to sharing their stories. We are truly blessed to have incredible individuals like these in our lives that are just as dedicated to our residents as we are. Thank you! ❤️
We'd like you to meet Jane Bowen! Here's her story, in her own words:
"I must tell a little history first. I met my future husband when I was 11 and he was 12. It must have been love at first sight because we dated from the time we were old enough, and after the first year of college we got married. We were married for 57 years.
▫️
In about 2005, I knew that there were some memory problems happening to Mack, but we still managed until 2016 when it became impossible for me to care for him. Diane Barret had invited me and my daughter to a support group meeting at Avery Place, so I saw what sort of facility was available. After investigating possible memory care facilities in our area, we knew that Avery Place was the best fit for us.
▫️
Mack became a resident in April of 2016 and we moved his furniture and special possessions into his new room. Best of all, I could come every day to be with him and for quite a long time I could pick him up and take him for outings. At Avery Place, he never realized whether he was at home or not. Memory care had some very special staff who cared for him and came to know and love him.
▫️
Every Sunday I would walk with Mack to the church service in the day room, and was so happy that he could still sing the hymns. Diane Barret played the piano and Gene Dubberly gave a message from the Bible. Afterwards Diane always had cake. Other couples would come to the service and it was what I have to call “my best Church”.
▫️
After Mack died, I still have to come to my best Church. I feel close to the residents, whom I have grown to love, and especially to the staff who go way beyond having “just a job.’’ And as a bonus I have special friends who have also had loved ones in residence at Avery Place."
We'd like you to meet Gene Dubberly! Here's his story, in his own words:
"Through the years there has been a Sunday worship service at Avery Place. In 2012, as a retired Baptist minister, I was asked to participate in the service. We set the service time for 1:00. That allowed spouses, relatives and friends to attend morning worship at their local church and then participate with Avery Place residents.
▫️
Attendees included residents from the Assisted Living and Memory Care as well as visitors. Attendance was always voluntary. Some family members who attended weekly continued their attendance after their loved one passed away. Diane Barret, Jane Bowen, Wanda Amos Hill and Harriett Wren are very good examples.
▫️
Diane Barret was the piano accompanist and each week she brought a cake that she had baked which was shared with the attendees. At each Sunday service four hymns were sung and I offered a bible study, followed by a time of prayer. Cake was served and the service closed with the singing of Amazing Grace.
▫️
During the pandemic, in-person activity with residents is not permitted, and so those of us on the "worship team" have come up with new ways to provide a Sunday service. Each week we have a window service with a format similar to our past services. Jane, Diane and I go either to individual rooms or stand in front of windows in the dining area and sing hymns, have bible study and offer prayers through the window. The residents always seem happy to see us and we are happy to be able to serve them in this way. We look forward to the day that we will be able to go inside and have the usual Sunday service.
▫️
What a privilege to continue to volunteer at Avery Place after eight wonderful years there. I receive spiritual satisfaction knowing that we are proclaiming the Lord's love to people whom he loves. I receive fraternal satisfaction realizing that many people have been kind to my family and me and I need to exercise kindness to people."
We'd like you to meet Diane Barret! Here is her story, in her own words:
"My history with Avery Place began in June of 2013. After several years of caring for my husband at home, he began to need more care than I could give him. I started investigating possible facilities in and around Athens. When I found Avery Place it seemed like such a good place for John. It was only 15 minutes from me so I would be able to visit him every day. I also liked the family atmosphere and the fact that it was smaller than many of the other places I had looked at.
▫️
John lived at Avery Place for 2 1/2 years until his death in 2015. He received excellent care from the staff and he made friends with some of the men who sat at his table. I went every day, and over time I became very attached to other residents. They were like family to me. I took John to a Sunday service each week led by Gene Dubberly, a retired Baptist minister. He enjoyed attending that as well as participating in other activities that were provided. I myself designed art projects for the residents and loved seeing them get involved in creative activities.
▫️
After John died in 2015 I continued to volunteer at Avery Place. I began playing hymns for the Sunday service and each week I baked a cake that I called "our communion cake". The residents looked forward to seeing what taste treat I came up with. Today - 5 year later - I am still volunteering. I love the residents who are ALWAYS welcoming and appreciative of everything I do. I also have become close to other family members whose loved ones were at Avery Place. They are dear friends today. Since the coronavirus I have found other ways to support the staff and residents. Even though we can't go inside, Gene Dubberly, Jane Bowen and myself now have a window service for individual residents on Sundays. They are happy to see us even if it is through a window, and we are delighted to see them.
▫️
Avery Place has been a great blessing to me in ways I would never have predicted! My husband had good care there during his last years. I have made friendships that mean a great deal to me. And I have found a place where I can share the gifts God has given me - music and baking! Who would have thought I would have such a ministry?! It truly is through "Amazing Grace"..."
