It is hard to know how often your plants should be getting watered, especially when it’s raining on a consistent basis. A great general tip for knowing if your plants need water is using the 4” method. First, make an "L" with your thumb straight out to the side and your other four fingers together straight up and down. Second, starting at the base of your plant (at soil level), stick your hand into the soil straight down until your palm is underground up to your thumb. What do you feel at your fingertips? If the soil feels mucky, the plants are being over-watered or rain has not soaked into the soil yet. Do not water! If the soil feels dry and light, the plants need water. If needed, water the plants (at the base of the plant) by counting to eight slowly. Please note that this is a general guide and every soil, plant and weather condition can change these guidelines.
Did you know that native plants have root systems up to 15’ deep? Think of how many erosion issues could be solved if native plants were used due to their amazing root systems! Using native plants in your landscape does not mean you have to have a full prairie throughout your yard. Natives can be planted throughout ornamental plant beds to give you not only soil stability, but eye-catching color too. These plants are very versatile and can handle harsh conditions such as steep hillsides, wet areas, dry areas along shorelines and along roadsides.
