About

People everywhere resolve on a daily basis to get fit, lose weight, become healthier, or to take action on their decreasing mobility, functionality, and vitality. Unfortunately, most people never attain their desired goals. I've heard all the excuses as to why it can't be done... lack of time; lack of energy; lack of motivation; lack of knowledge; injuries. To which I have one answer: lack of commitment. It can be done!

Those who really want something will find a way. Those who don't will find an excuse. Stop chasing the latest fads, quick fixes, and shortcuts. Decide whether your goal or rather YOU are worth the effort. You've had successes in other areas of your life because you've committed yourself completely. If you're ready, we'll tap into that same force to bring about results in your health and fitness as well.

Appointments outside of business hours available upon request!

Some thoughts for those us who didn’t see the glasses as half full in 2020. Garrett Stangel December 31, 2020 at 4:40 PM · Open Letter to New Year’s Resolutionists Strength is not born out of ease. It’s born out of struggle. For many of us 2020 is about as difficult as we’ve seen in our lifetime. Good! I don’t mean to seem unempathetic and I apologize if you’ve lost a loved one to 2020 but the struggle will make us stronger if we let it. My struggles with 2020 we’re limited isolation from those I wish I could hug and the financial strain of two struggling fitness businesses that were “unnecessary” in the midst of the pandemic. I was of good health and had all my fundamental needs met (food, shelter, clothing, and love). To the contrary, I empathized with all those who shared their anxiety, fears, and depression with me both in sessions and on social media. My family and home were relatively safe. The Covid pandemic and social justice issues frightened me but at no point threatened my life. I helped where I could but ultimately could return to the safety and security of my home at the end of the day. Nietzsche said “that which does not kill us makes us stronger”. I don’t know enough about Nietzsche to know if he was a reputable guy to take advice from but he’s not the only one to share this sentiment. Under the circumstances fear, anxiety, and all the “negative” emotions are a great thing if we are willing to tune into them. Perhaps not in the moment but in the moments that follow when you can find some clarity and perspective on the situation. When dealing with my own negative emotions this year I turned to reading philosophy of stoics who had seen far worse than I and manage to stay grounded in truths such as the “obstacle is the way”. Marcus Aurelius wrote these words in a plague during his own time that took several of his children and ultimately his own life. His philosophy of the obstacle being the way is mirrored by Nietzsche and other modern day philosophers, psychologists and health coaches like myself who refer to these as growth edges. These growth edges are emotional hotspots for us that identify needs unmet. Not all needs are under our control but those that are are worth pursuing. The pain of the obstacle or growth edge is a sign of work that needs to be done, conversations that need to be had and actions that need to be taken. These growth edges are welcome signs of progress just beyond if you are willing to struggle with it. New Year’s tends to be a big time when people set goals along some of these growth edges and vow to make the new year better than the last by making a few changes. Kudos to those of you who acknowledge that their current situation isn’t where they want to be and are willing to stare into the obstacle and commit to face it head on. I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know but change is extremely difficult and the odds are against you. Wanting it to be different doesn’t mean anything. You will have to make it so. To borrow another phrase you’ve likely heard “many hands make light work”. Let me help you. As a health coach my work is to help you identify the growth edge and to help you define the low hanging fruit that helps you to take action. I serve as a sounding board and accountability partner and when necessary an expert in exercise, nutrition and healthy lifestyles to advise you when you’re stuck. 2020 has been difficult. 2021 may not be any easier. Choose the obstacle as the way. Choose to identify your growth edges and commit to taking action to break down your personal barriers and to be stronger for whatever 2021 throws at you. Be Well, Garrett P.s. I don’t believe the caption “worst year ever”.
From our partner at Gigi’s playhouse: LETS GET FIT TOGETHER IN THE NEW YEAR! Our athletes aren’t making excuses – they're getting fit! Matthew and his friends at GiGiFIT aren’t making excuses this New Year, they are all about getting fit! Together, they are changing the way the world sees Down syndrome both inside and out as they attend GiGiFIT Adult at Balance Fitness in Glendale. The GiGiFIT programs are specifically designed to allow individuals with Down syndrome to meet their fitness goals and resolutions by addressing common issues for individuals with Down syndrome including low muscle tone, excessive joint instability, and decreased balance. This winter we are expanding the GiGiFIT program to include kids, toddlers, and infants as well as continuing to support our teens and adults. Participants will meet weekly in-person or virtually to focus on improving strength, endurance and balance while promoting wellness and self-confidence. The social connection provided by GiGiFIT is very supporting during these times. Exercising with a group is fun and helps build friendships as each participant works toward goals together. As Matthew meets his friends weekly at Balance Fitness, they inspire the other patrons and their families. At GiGi's Playhouse Milwaukee, we are proud to bring our community a weekly program that not only brings friends together but supports them to stay healthy in the New Year and throughout their lifetime! Register NOW for the 8-week GiGiFIT Winter session (Feb-Mar. 2021). This Physical Therapy program is specially designed for each age group.
