Denise Simmonds published a note. 5 September 2012 at 23:05 · The family that lives in my backyard Sooo….Last year a rooster and two hens started to scout our yard.  They would “hop” the fence and do their suitability walk through… At the time, I thought they were just looking for a short cut to go about their business and do whatever it is chickens/fowls do in their spare time or whatever time they had on their hands (feet) whatever. So after a week of scouting, the rooster decided that he was going to take up residence (squat) in the mango tree in the back of the yard.  Now, I don’t mind animals as long as them keep to themselves.  But this rooster seemed to be very virile because him and the two hens start to make a real fuss at night time.  Enough noise that I had to start to sleep with the windows closed. I started to feel sorry for the hens because I really didn’t know that roosters were so insatiable.  Well at least he found a home for them before him start to hassle them body.  But anyway a few weeks or maybe it was months later I see the rooster and the two hens strutting proudly about the front yard showing off them brood of chickens.  So since I watch discovery channel, I thought that this behavior was an indication that they were getting ready to migrate back to wherever they came from, since they now had chicks.  I was overjoyed.  But lo and behold, this became a regular thing as if they were taking leisure walks as a family.  Now you would probably wonder why I haven’t stoned them as yet.  I am very superstitious or reverent.  Any animal that gets special mention at a momentous occasion in the bible, I try to keep far from them. So it would appear that since the rooster has a family, him either think him have to work harder than usual or the baby chicks must be keeping him up because him crowing all hours of the night and morning and day time too.  Usually roosters crow round about six o clock where I come from.  This rooster crows  “All-A-Clock!” Now it would appear that one of the baby chicks was male because now at this very moment we have a “teenage” male chicken learning how to crow.  I thought they said “two cock cyant rule inna one pen”.  Well I guess if the two are father and son then there is an exception.  So anyway, this young rooster seem to have a better sense of timing than him daddy!  At least him crow (or at least try to crow, because I don’t know what kind of sound that!!) at about 2AM and 5AM consistently. When I first heard the sound, I was startled.  I wondered what alien life form was outside.  It sounded like a cross between a hen’s cluck when she is about to lay her eggs and somebody gargling water. Then, I realized it was the young rooster because soon after that horrid sound, I heard daddy rooster crowing.  So it would appear that daddy rooster was teaching him how to crow.  I thought those things came naturally in animals/fowls. So I am guessing since a fowl year is like a month.. and if I remember clearly my brother’s voice cracked for almost a year , then that young rooster should have grown into his voice already!!  And any fowl over a year is an Old Fowl (BTW try not to crack the bones of an old fowl, you will lose couple teeth.  And for those who didn’t know, you have to be a special cook to be able to prepare Old’ Fowl for a meal – All Hail Aunty Queenie!!) Anyway, to cut a long story short… That teenage rooster better hurry up and grow into his voice because I am tempted to stone him tonight! And may God forgive me for doing so… I might be having Old Fowl for dinner tomorrow. And BTW, I don’t live on a farm so this has upped the annoyance level three-fold.
