St. Clair was known as The Ridge, then Travellers, and finally the name St. Clair was given in 1859 when the railroad came through town. It was named in honor of a resident civil engineer of the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad, known at that time as the Southwest Branch Railroad.

Although many people believe the town of Pacific was named after the Pacific Railroad, legend has it that when the railroad began in St. Louis in 1851, the dream was that the railroad would some day reach the Pacific Ocean. The story is that town was actually named in honor of that dream. Pacific’s name was confirmed by a resolution passed by the Franklin Town Board on January 29, 1859.
