On September 10, Banner Health changed its visitor restrictions at hospitals in the metropolitan Phoenix, Tucson and Casa Grande areas. One visitor per patient per day is now permitted for most in-patients. Out-patient buildings and out-patient services attached to hospitals (e.g. emergency room, out-patient treatment centers, etc.) still do not permit visitors with few exceptions. Visits for most patients will be permitted from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a maximum duration of 3 hours. More details about the changes, including a list of exceptions, can be found here: https://bit.ly/3hAAqxn. Check out the tips below.
For #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth, meet Calvin! His fight is against osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer that begins in the cells that form bones. Calvin has the heart of a superhero and he combats his cancer with humor and a positive attitude. Even when he is not having the best of days, one can still expect a humorous comment to lighten the mood. Calvin's mother says, "We are extremely grateful for the Banner Health staff in all aspects and our family is confidant in the dynamic services Banner provides. One day Calvin will be cancer-free!" We are all rooting for you! #CCAM
Thank you to Cancer Connected for delivering these cute “roller coasters,” that go on the bottom of a rolling IV pole, as a way to bring some joy to patients at Banner Children’s at Desert. These are donated in honor of former patient Ariah Price, who lost her life after a valiant battle against cancer.

Halloween at the hospital is never easy, but Child Life and partners like Spirit Halloween help make it a fun experience. Banner Health November 2 at 11:19 PM · To ensure Halloween was not one of the childhood hallmarks getting canceled this year, Spirit of Children delivered one-of-a-kind care packages to more than 140 pediatric hospitals across the U.S. and Canada, including pediatric patients at Banner Children's at Desert. Each care package contained assorted costumes, activity books, crayons and treat bags. Child Life Specialists “reverse trick-or-treated” with the children by delivering the packages individually to patients’ rooms. In addition to the reverse trick or treating, Banner Children’s at Desert also hosted contactless celebrations with a virtual craft activity for patients with Comicare superheroes.
PAY IT FORWARD FOR PAYTEN: We extend extreme gratitude to Kim and Joseph Merrill, who graciously honor their daughter Payten, who lost her battle against illness 18 months ago. Payten’s family was by her side throughout treatment, which included spending more than 500 nights at the hospital. Now they collect toys and funds to honor Payten by helping other children. They are grateful for the love and care she received from our nurses and doctors.

March is #ChildLifeMonth. During this month, we recognize our outstanding Child Life Specialists. In our facilities, they help infants, children, youth and families cope with the stress and uncertainty of acute and chronic illness, injury, trauma, disability, loss and bereavement. They provide evidence-based, developmentally and psychologically appropriate interventions including therapeutic play, preparation for procedures, and education to reduce fear, anxiety, and pain. During COVID-19, our Child Life teams have had to find creative ways to engage our patients and families with this added uncertainty, during an already scary time. They used technology to bridge any gaps, and truly made our facilities a better place. Thank you for all that you do, Child Life!
