The transplant was cancelled and treatment for COVID-19 began. Williams' symptoms worsened and he would need to be intubated and placed on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or ECMO. It is a medical miracle thanks to the work of more than 100 staff members who gave round the clock care.

Mental lag is something doctors have been studying in head-injury patients for years. But along comes 2020 and the coronavirus, and suddenly, people who've recovered from COVID-19 are complaining about cognitive issues.
"Mainly headaches, dizziness, delirium imbalance, and cognitive problems," says Co-Director of Banner-University Medical Center Tucson Stroke Program, Dr. Mohammad El-Ghanem. "We're talking about things like short-term memory loss and difficulty memorizing things that you could in the past."

March begins anniversaries of important dates related to the pandemic we have all experienced this past year. Our hearts and thoughts are always with those whom we have lost and those who have suffered and may still be suffering symptoms from this virus.
We are incredibly proud of all that our Banner organization has accomplished to care for our communities. We are in awe of the sacrifices, dedication and skill our healthcare heroes on the frontlines and their leaders have displayed. To honor their dedication, we took a moment to reflect on the past year and its impact on the work and personal lives of our team members.

KGUN 9 On Your Side shares the story of Blanca Loera and her baby Violeta, born weighing 1.7 lbs. Violeta was born 17 weeks early at Diamond Children’s Medical Center after her mother was treated for preeclampsia.
Violeta was hospitalized for four months and Blanca for three weeks. While caring for Violeta in the hospital, Blanca did not have the opportunity to plan for her newborn’s eventual home care needs so the Diamond Children’s Medical Center team reached out to 5-2-0 SXS for help.
5-2-0 SXS is a local Tucson off-road club who are committed to community giving and donating to the hospitalized children and families at Diamond Children’s. The club came through for Blanca and her family donating a crib, clothing, diapers, toys and even helped to fix Blanca’s car. Watch KGUN’s heartwarming story here: https://bit.ly/3vE8h0u
