Since 1982 people around the country have taken this time every year to celebrate Respiratory Therapists (RTs) and draw attention to the importance of lung health. This year Respiratory Care Week is celebrated October 25 – October 31. October is typically a good time to think about respiratory health because of the start of flu season, but in 2020 respiratory health is of particular importance because of COVID-19. Respiratory Therapists and other health professionals around the world have been working tirelessly all year to support the lung health of those affected by the pandemic, putting themselves on the front lines of the fight against the virus. November is Lung Cancer Awareness month. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death and the second most common cancer among both men and women in the United States. Early symptoms of lung cancer can exhibit as a new cough that is persistent or worsens, a change in an existing chronic cough or a cough that produces blood. Other symptoms may include pain in the chest, back or shoulders that worsens during coughing, laughing or deep breathing or shortness of breath that comes on suddenly and occurs during everyday activities. If you are concerned you may have early signs of lung cancer, you may need to see a doctor.
