Our Houston office remodel is COMPLETE!! With a year like 2020 we needed a fresh new start. Now we just need a COVID vaccine so we can come together safely and actually enjoy the space with our clients 😏.
As my nieces go back to school, sending my best wishes to all for a safe and productive school year!

Juneteenth Reflections

My family story exemplifies Black entrepreneurship under the repeated pressure of white American establishment’s “knees on our necks”. On this Juneteenth 2020, I say their names.
In 1810, my father’s ancestor, James Dungey, along with 90 other families, established Israel Hill, a 200-acre homestead in what is now Prince Edward County, VA. This “experiment” was comprised of experienced teachers, preachers, boatwrights, carpenters, blacksmiths, and brick masons. The denial of equal justice following the Civil war eventually crushed this platform for generational wealth.
In 1914, James Dungey’s relative, Roscoe Dungey, founded The Black Dispatch, first Black-owned newspaper in Oklahoma City. He covered "The Black Wall Street" bombing by white supremacists, one the worst of the repeated attempts to squash Black wealth.
Around the same time that Black communities in Oklahoma were being “bombed”, my mother’s grandfather, Nicholas Allen Saunders, was learning brickmaking via a correspondence course. He went on to build his home and establish the Allen Saunders Concrete and Cinder Building Block Manufacturing Company in ‘The Bottoms” of Bluefield, Virginia. He trained his sons to build their homes as well. He and his friends invested in a soda bottling company. He was an informal community banker for his neighbors. The vibrant community that Nicholas Saunders helped build consisted of homes, gardens, and churches, as well a school, convenience store, tennis court, and baseball diamond.
My mother, who was born in the early 1920s, remembers all of this. She also remembers that the space that was their community was taken and destroyed by eminent domain, ostensibly for railroad expansion that, to this day, has not yet occurred.
My parents purchased a home and ran two businesses in Philadelphia. The value of each was negatively impacted by redlining and banking discrimination. But we remain a family of entrepreneurs.
Today we honor the resistance and resilience embodied in Juneteenth as we call the names we know ̶ Dungey, Allen, Saunders and Paige ̶ and declare that the fight for justice and peace must continue.
