The Homeowners Insurance industry in Florida has reached the crisis level due to excessive lawsuits and awards. If nothing changes this will guarantee massive rate increases (already seeing this)and limited company’s writing policy’s. Agents across the state are already experiencing issues obtaining coverage for some homeowners due to the markets tightening up. Several insurance companies have gone out of business in the last several weeks because they ran out of money. A well known insurance carrier has announced that they are forced to cancel 7000 policy’s. Demotech has announced that there will be 15+ companies facing downgrades in there financial rating. If nothing changes this year in Tallahassee, I’m afraid we will see another insurance market like we did after the “sinkhole” crisis, Florida policy holders had little option but to use the state run insurance company of last resort “Citizens”. I’m in Tallahassee this week fighting for some relief for our clients and all Floridians, if you have a moment please call your legislators and let them know you pay enough for insurance, and you don’t want your insurance cost increasing drastically due to lawsuit abuse.
