ELUSIVE GROUP OF TRAVELING DISTRACTION BURGLARS WHO ARE SUSPECTED OF VICTIMIZING PEOPLE ACROSS THE STATE CAPTURED BY MCSO
It’s a group of traveling distraction burglars that we have been warning our citizens about for years, and now three suspects are in our jail charged with crimes they have been suspected of committing throughout the state.
Yesterday, 29-year old John Eric Thompson and 28-year old Nikko Gigolo Thompson of Ft. Lauderdale, along with 56-year old Tom Bimbo of Cleveland, Ohio, -- who claimed they were from a fence company, worked to distract their intended victim, while making it inside her home to steal jewelry and heirlooms. But that victim, an alert senior citizen, suspected something was wrong. She called MCSO with her concerns, excellent descriptions of the suspects, and enough of a vehicle description to alert uniform road patrol deputies and criminal investigation detectives to the possibility that these were part of a group of traveling criminals that have managed to avoid capture for far too long. MCSO detectives and road units saturated the surrounding area—and a short time later, located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Inside the car, the trio of thieves, and their last round of stolen jewelry.
Traveling burglars are suspected of victimizing people across the state, typically targeting senior citizens. They pose as fence repair men, landscapers, tree trimmers, surveyors, utility workers or fake contractors who claim they were hired by your neighbors to complete a service that may affect your property. So as one or two distract a homeowner, the other(s) slip into a victim’s house and steal jewelry, money, heirlooms and anything they can take in a limited amount of time. In some cases, distraction burglars even convince their targets that they are looking for a lost dog, or a missing child. Anything to distract the victim, or get them out of the home. This time though, they picked the wrong house in the wrong county.
We would like to applaud the victim in this case for her quick thinking and subsequent phone call to MCSO. That was all our deputies and detectives needed to put an end to this trail of statewide havoc that these criminals have carved out for many months. More than 40-pieces of jewelry was located inside the suspect’s vehicle. Only a portion of it belonged to their last victim. Please feel free to share their photos in the event other victim’s may have had experiences with them. If so, please call MCSO.
All three suspects have been charged with Occupied Burglary and Grand Theft. Additional charges are anticipated.
