Whatβs spookier than bats? A Halloween without them. Fruit bats around the world are pollinators and seed dispersers of more than 500 species of plants. Without them, we wouldn't have mango, banana, guava or agave. Without North American insectivorous bats, we would have higher numbers of agricultural pest insects. In fact, scientists estimate that bats may save us $3.7 billion a year in crop damage and pesticide use. de.gov/bats

DYK that bats have helped us with huge scientific advancements? To name a few, bats helped us develop sonar from studying their echolocation and the medicine used for stroke victims was developed from studying certain properties of vampire bat saliva. de.gov/bats

Have you spotted any bats out and about this winter? You may think that these critters hibernate, but bats actually enter torpor in the winter, which is a state of decreased activity. Some will wake up periodically for water and, on warmer nights, may fly around to forage for food. de.gov/bats
With winter temperatures continuing to drop, our wildlife removal specialists recently highlighted a few of the critters that may seek shelter inside your #home to escape the cold. βπ πΏπ¦π¦
