Located beside the Retail Pharmacy, the chapel is open 24 hours a day for personal worship, prayer and reflection. Lupus is a chronic, automimmune disease. There are a few different forms of the disease but the name is usually used to describe systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), the most common and most serious type. The fact there’s so much variation in how lupus shows up and impacts sufferers is one reason it’s often misunderstood and can be hard to diagnose, explained Rheumatologist Robert Moyer, MD. According to the Lupus Foundation of America, close to 1.5 million Americans are living with a form of lupus.

As part of its recognition of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Month, Bayhealth held a ceremony on Oct. 9 to dedicate a CuddleCot that was previously donated by Katy Towery in memory of her son Greyson who was born “sleeping” at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus in June.

Family Medicine Physicians Andrea Arellano Vu, MD, and Kenny Vu, MD, were exploring an avenue to treat patients who couldn’t easily come to the office, due to work schedules, transportation issues, being bed-bound, anxiety over leaving home, or other challenges. Bayhealth now offers a new procedure called TCAR (Transcarotid Artery Revascularization) to treat high surgical risk patients with carotid artery disease and prevent future strokes. TCAR is a minimally invasive and safe approach that is clinically proven to reduce the risk of stroke for patients needing stenting for clogged carotid arteries in order to improve blood flow to the brain. Vascular and Thoracic Surgeon Paul Fedalen, MD, was the lead surgeon for the first TCAR performed at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus. He was joined by Interventional Cardiologist Khaled Eljazzar, MD, and Interventional Neurologist Sumeet Multani, MD, in launching Bayhealth’s TCAR program and successfully completing the first case.

Bayhealth was recently named Client of the Year by Surgical Directions, a consulting firm it worked with to modify and refine its Operating Room processes and improve its Perioperative Services with a goal of increasing staff, surgeon and patient satisfaction.
The project involved several departments at Bayhealth including, but not limited to, Perioperative Services, Anesthesiology, Endoscopy, the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Central Sterile Processing, Materials Management, and Patient Access, as well as surgeons and their staff. Over the course of several months, the interdisciplinary team evaluated and revamped everything from scheduling to preadmission testing and authorizations to the patient experience on the day of surgery. Their hard work and dedication is one of the reasons they received the award from Surgical Directions

Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit Nurse Gavin Brown, RN, joined Bayhealth four years ago as a certified nursing assistant. Brown says he would frequently pick up extra shifts on other units throughout the hospital in order to become a well-rounded CNA and to find his niche for when he became a registered nurse. “I found that niche when I began working shifts in the Medical ICU at Kent. I applied immediately and was hired to the Neurosurgical ICU when I graduated nursing school in December 2018,” he explained. #YON2020 #YearOfTheNurse

Bayhealth Foundation Hosts Greater Kent Committee
Team members in Bayhealth Medical Group’s Revenue Cycle initiated efforts this fall to help their community members in need. Involving the Medical Group Administration, the Coronavirus Management Team (CMT), the Patient Information Center (PIC), and other neighboring Bayhealth employees in the Blue Hen Corporate Center, they launched a Thanksgiving food drive to collect non-perishable food items, as well as monetary donations toward the purchase of turkeys, for donation to the local food bank. With everyone’s generosity, 496 pounds of food and 18 turkeys were contributed, for a total of over 700 pounds of food, to go to local families. They have also started collecting winter items for a local homeless shelter and blankets for an animal welfare organization.

Clinical Coordinator Tyler Coty, MSN, RN, CCRN, joined Bayhealth seven years ago as a registered nurse on the Medical Intensive Care Unit at the Kent Campus. “I think the coronavirus pandemic has been an opportunity for the community to see what it is that we do and what we’ve been facing every day with the virus,” he said. “The Medical ICU is a COVID-19 unit. It has not been easy, but our strength and perseverance speak volumes on what we’ve been able to get through this year.”

Our #LittleBlessings continue today with an unbelievably heartwarming story involving some of our own team members. On New Year’s Eve, Bayhealth Application Analyst III Kelley Maloney and her family set up in the parking lot of Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus to wait for news about the birth of their first grandchild. The family set up at 10:30 a.m. and waited. Around 3:30 p.m. the temperature started dropping. That’s when many of our Food Services team members made sure the family was taken care of with hot beverages to stay warm. Then, at 4:45 p.m. the family heard the news they were waiting for – the baby had arrived, and it was a girl! You know what makes the story even better? Both grandmothers are part of the Bayhealth family! In addition to Kelley, Care Manager Laura Samaha is the other proud grandmother! Congratulations to everyone! Thank you for letting us tell this amazing story of one very special #LittleBlessing and one very supportive Bayhealth family!

Today we’re wishing Ruby McCrea a very happy 2nd birthday! Ruby was the first baby born at Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus. This year the McCrea family has grown to a family of 5. In June, Ruby became a big sister when the family welcomed Levi McCrea into the world. A couple months later, Mojo, their four-month-old Havenesse puppy brother joined the family. Congratulations to the McCrea family!
It’s been two years since the Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus opened its doors on Friday, Feb. 5, 2019. Driven by his passion and commitment to helping our community members get back to good health, hospitalist Muhammed Syed, MD, looks back on the first days at the new hospital and the honor of admitting the first patient from the Emergency Department. That patient, a woman with gastro-intestinal bleeding, remains distinctly etched in this doctor’s mind.
“It was a big day for us,” said Dr. Syed, noting that he was Apogee’s program director at the time. Choreographing the successful move from the former Milford Memorial Hospital to the new Sussex Campus was a challenge. “Everything went smoothly. It was a super transition, like a well-oiled Swiss watch. There were no hiccups. It was an amazing transition, quite an undertaking. I was so proud to be a part of it.”

Team members at Bayhealth Medical Group's Revenue Cycle are spreading cheer this winter by giving back. Through their Warm-Up Winter Holiday Drive, they collected 50 mittens/gloves, 30 hats and 8 face masks for men, women and children that were delivered to a local community charity.
In observance of Ash Wednesday, Bayhealth Volunteer Chaplain Christine Miller-Marcin imposes ashes at the Bayhealth Sussex Campus.
At Bayhealth, one way we ensure staff safety is through annual N-95 mask fit testing. Fit testing involves breath patterns, movement, even bending over to ensure the size is just right. Another component is the sugar water spray test to ensure the mask has just the right seal. Thank you to our dedicated Bayhealth Occupational Health team members who conduct this annual testing!
As a member of the Delaware Perinatal Quality Collaborative (DPQC), Bayhealth is participating in a campaign with the Division of Public Health (DPH) to raise awareness and promote the importance of completing the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) survey. The main component of the campaign is giving free PRAMS branded goodie bags to new moms at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent and Sussex Campuses. Each bag contains items for both mom and baby such as masks, onesies, and drinking cups. Our team in the Sterile Processing department is driven to work together to provide the best for patients. In honor of Black History Month, we asked Sterile Processing Manager Grunderson Jean Phillipe to share his thoughts. Here’s what he had to say:
“We have a diverse team of individuals. This diverse group comes together to work for excellent patient care – because laundry is the only thing that should be separated by color. The teamwork in our department is comprised of trust, tolerance and communication as a foundation of best practices. Each member of our department brings a different contribution to this relationship to make it better. They work positively together with everyone to get the job done the best way possible. We believe, that we must make everyone feel important, valued, respected, and needed.”

The ways Bayhealth Medical Staff takes care of our community are boundless. They generously donated $100,000 to establish a fund to help community members in need. Bayhealth General Surgeon Edward Alexander, MD, started this effort among his colleagues and worked with the Bayhealth Foundation to carry it out. A committee reviews nominations made by Medical Staff members for individuals, families or community charities deserving of aid. The first grant recipient was a local food bank.
“The pandemic has made us even more aware of those around us needing help,” said Dr. Alexander. “Collectively, we can make a difference locally for years to come.”
Surgery Scheduler Nichole Garris joined Bayhealth Gastroenterology, Sussex Campus a few months before the coronavirus was declared a pandemic. As the reality of the COVID-19 set in, she simply wanted to do something to take her mind off the world around her.
At home, Garris has a soon-to-be 3-year-old son that has driven her to put more effort into living a better lifestyle. “I’ll be 40 in May and I want to be a healthier mom for my son,” she said. “I lost 30 pounds this past year and have been able to keep it off,” she said.
Garris recently received her one-year of service pin from Bayhealth. “Being a part of this organization has been a welcoming experience,” she said. “I didn’t know anyone when I started and now, I have a new family.”

The patient wrote that they “had a very minor physical issue upon arriving for my surgery follow-up visit. Julia was very compassionate and help provide me with what I needed to remedy the situation. Thank you, Julia, for the exceptional care and your compassionate understanding.” Kudos to Julia for making the patient experience a positive one!

Over the past six months, Bayhealth Family Medicine Program Director Brintha Vasagar, MD, MPH, FAAFP, has earned many honors including a Minority Business Leader award from Philadelphia Business Journal, being named among Delaware Business Times’ DBT40 for statewide achievers and innovators under the age of 40, and being featured in Women in Business in Delaware Today’s December issue.
Humbled by the accolades, Dr. Vasagar is most proud of the innovative teamwork in building a residency program at Bayhealth that will address physician shortages locally and strengthen population health. “There have been plenty of times in my career that I’ve been the youngest person, or the only woman, or the only person of color in the room, and I’ve been fortunate to have mentors and colleagues that included and guided me,” she said. “There is so much value in having diverse voices at the table. Including diverse voices on our team is uniquely shaping how we will train residents to best serve our community.”

As we excitedly await the announcement of our first residents on Match Day, Bayhealth Internal Medicine Program Director Joseph M. Deutsch, MD, reflected on the impact of his own residency experience.
“I completed my residency training in internal medicine at Christiana Care in 2009. I loved my residency training. I felt like I joined a family for 3 years. The relationships I built during residency continue to this day. I also learned how to be a mentor, a coach, and a teacher during residency. I arrived as an intern, under-confident and unsure of myself, and left residency feeling confident and secure in myself and my career path. Since residency I have grown as a leader through countless encounters with students and residents. I have been lucky enough to really help people during their own residency training and make a difference in their lives. That has been incredibly rewarding and makes me excited to be a residency program director at Bayhealth and definitely what drives me to come to work every day.”
