It sometimes seems that the world of behavioral health is a mess of letters: CBT, DBT and EMDR. These acronyms stand for different treatment modalities that are often used during therapy for substance use disorders. One treatment, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), helps trauma survivors manage intrusive symptoms like flashbacks and disturbing dreams. In addiction treatment, EMDR can be used to help alleviate some of the emotional distress around triggers, which are often cited as a significant cause for relapse. https://psychcentral.com/lib/how-emdr-therapy-heals-trauma-and-addiction/

We almost always try to feature a hopeful or motivational message in the first post we share each week. We do this because we know what a significant challenge it often is to feel inspired and energized on Mondays. For the millions of Americans who have ADHD, though, the fight to remain focused and driven can be an ongoing struggle. In a recent Psych Central article, two ADHD experts shared a series of valuable strategies that can make a world of difference: http://ow.ly/5BUF102pNyI PSYCHCENTRAL.COM 9 Ways for Adults with ADHD to Get Motivated

Oftentimes, when we start recovery, we recognize that there are underlying patterns in relationships that fueled or supported our problematic substance use. John and Julie Gottman, founders of the Gottman Institute, study relationships and remind us that “no one can provide their partner with everything. A single person can’t fulfill another’s every need.” This statement is the antithesis of co-dependence, and allows us to consider how to build strong, healthy relationships. https://www.gottman.com/blog/weekend-homework-assignment-taking-care-of-each-other-by-taking-care-of-ourselves/?fbclid=IwAR3bz3uNOTdYVKF6EYvNIfLiMY3KjBoQcWehHkr0HDf57HClSE3bUwyQsHI
Yesterday was the start of OCD Awareness Week, which runs through October 17. According to research cited by the National Institute of Mental Health, more than 2 million adults in the U.S. are currently struggling with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Signs and symptoms of this disorder occur most commonly among adults and older teenagers, but children can also be affected. OCD is hardly a rare disorder, yet many people continue to believe myths and false information. Every person who reads this post can support the effort to promote OCD awareness. You can learn more about OCD via this link: http://ow.ly/llNT102p8aW IOCDF.ORG What is OCD? | International OCD Foundation

Let's face it: Nowadays, we're constantly connected to our smartphones. And when they're not in our hands, they're readily available in our pockets. But when screens capture so much of our attention, we miss out on experiences we'll always remember. Tell us what you do to take a break from your phone.

Putting the people you care about first is an act of generosity, but it can also keep you from meeting your own needs. Make your physical and mental health a priority in the new year.
It's no secret that 2020 was a challenging year, especially for those who are grappling with addiction or a mental health disorder. Sadly, the fear of criticism stopped many people from seeking professional help. We're dedicated to ending the stigma in 2021. http://ow.ly/1VZl102wiF9
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s influential efforts for civil rights in America had a compelling impact that won't soon be forgotten. Dr. King recognized the power of nonviolent resistance in the fight for racial equality for Black Americans. Today, we pay tribute to Dr. King's legacy and the work he did to make America a more equitable nation.
During the holidays, you were focused on giving, but as you start the new year, it's a great time to self-reflect. Take a moment and repeat positive affirmations that remind you that you deserve the same compassion and love that you give others.
