"The beauty and power of any senior living community comes from the strong bonds that develop among and between residents and staff. COVID can’t stop the love, support, friendship and connection that is the gestalt of a senior living community. But a community can stop COVID and maintain friendships and connection, a key to quality of life."

Throughout the pandemic, many child care centers have stayed open for the children of front-line workers, including Bayview's Intergenerational Children's Center. 👏👏 Bayview's Intergenerational Children's Center has a rare opening for infants from 3 to 4 months through 12 months of age.👏👏
Intergenerational programming looks a little different during a pandemic, but this remains constant: magical things happen when you pair the young and the old, safely and with strict infection control procedures. Our top priority is the safety of our early learners, residents, staff and greater community and we have had no known COVID-19 cases to date. Please contact Mary Ho via mho@bayviewseattle.org for details.

It's been a trying time for everyone as the pandemic and wildfires rage on in tandem. However, it's moments like these that provide some sense of normalcy during these extraordinary times. We were fortunate enough to record a 40-minute piano performance by Bayview resident, Dr. William Clarke. The full recording will be released soon for residents and the greater community. For now, we hope this short teaser provides you unexpected solace today.

As we come to an extreme end to this year's fire season, we are offered a glimmer of hope with Seattle's cooler weather next week. Stay safe everyone.
A message from Joel Smith, Bayview Health Services Administrator: "The wildfires throughout the Pacific Northwest have wreaked havoc on Seattle’s air quality. Weather reports are highlighting poor air quality pockets and warning the public of dangerous areas throughout the day especially for those in a higher risk category to be adversely affected. Know your risk. Stay indoors. Monitor weather reports. Close all windows and doors. Closing windows and doors limits the amount of fine particles that may enter into your apartment."

Dear Bayview Community,
We are pleased to share that the second round of COVID-19 testing of the staff members who were suspected of exposure have yielded all negative results. The staff member who tested positive remains in quarantine and continues to recover following the guidance of the Department of Health and physician care.
This is a crucial reminder that we should not become complacent. Thank you to all - for your unending commitment in the consistent and proper use of face masks, maintaining social distancing, and practicing excellent hand hygiene. We remain inspired by the strength and resilience this community exhibits each day. Read full memo below:

COVID-19 Update | Bayview, Life Plan Community
Dear Bayview Community,
Since the beginning of this pandemic, we committed to keeping our community informed when Bayview had a confirmed case of COVID-19 in our building. The Executive Team became aware on October 11th, 2020 of a staff member that tested positive with COVID-19. The staff member is currently following quarantine precautions and is resting at home. This is the first and only confirmed case at Bayview.
The nature of the staff member’s work was assessed by executive leadership to have no exposure to residents and limited exposure to other staff members. Therefore, we believe the risk of an outbreak to our community is very low. We'd also be remiss if we didn't mention our COVID-free status for the last 7 months, and that is something we are all very proud of. We are hopeful this is a contained incident, and we will return to our COVID-free status.

Bayview Resident Sue finds solace and joy during the pandemic when making homemade pesto for her children and grandchildren. The basil, mint, and oregano were all grown from Bayview's green house. What makes this batch extra special? She extended that joy by sharing the bounty with other resident neighbors. Thanks Sue for sharing a glimpse of your story with us!

On behalf of all of Bayview, our Intergenerational Children's Center students, Clio and Narine, wish you all a very #HappyThanksgiving! These early learners spent much of last week making Thanksgiving-themed crafts for Bayview residents. Thank you Clio and Narine for uplifting spirits throughout the community:
As difficult as this year has been, #Thanksgiving is a time to show our gratitude for our friends, family, and all that we have in life. This is also a chance to realize that not everyone has those same gifts. Today, Bayview's culinary services staff are busy preparing over 100 meals to the homeless on behalf of every resident who have pledged to stay safe by staying home this Thanksgiving. We're grateful to see and feel the Bayview community spirit continue to thrive despite this pandemic.
Our drop-off location, Queen Anne Food Bank at Sacred Heart, serves those in need without discrimination and with the utmost respect for their dignity. While they are unable to accept hot meals due to COVID restrictions, please consider donating to QAFB: https://qafb.org/.
We know the heartbreaking reality that a lot of us won't be able to spend #Thanksgiving with our families due to the Governor's proclamation to curb infection rates in Washington. We would love to showcase your special Thanksgiving video messages to your loved ones living at Bayview. Here's how to do it in three easy steps:
1) ✅ Record a short video of you and anyone else you wish to include and share a special Thanksgiving message. (Preferably in horizontal format). Feel free to send any photos as well!
2) ✅ Please send your video file to Heather Smith, Director of Resident Services at hsmith@bayviewseattle.org by Tuesday, November 24th. If your file is too big, feel free to use DropBox.
3) ✅ Include your name and resident's name in the subject line.
We'll be showcasing your videos and photos via our in-house channel! We so appreciate your help!

As the world continues to battle COVID-19, health surveys are showing another victim of the pandemic may be our happiness. Finding moments of joy during these trying times is difficult without a doubt. But still, the moments of joy fight through.

Al and Mary have a very special Bayview love story. The couple actually met and got married at Bayview! The two of them were a part of the Milk Carton Derby Committee at Bayview, where the residents were tasked with building a milk carton boat to race on Greenlake. They became very good friends while working together on this committee and eventually started going on excursions together outside of Bayview like taking the ferry to Bainbridge Island. One day Al was reminded of a quote from a Tennessee Williams play that said, “life is like a three-act play, and the third act is poorly written”. At that moment he realized with Mary, his third-act could be nothing short of spectacular and he proposed to her. The couple was then married at the Bayview Chapel in 2018.
When asked for a piece of advice they might offer for a long-lasting love Al said the key to it is to always say “Yes dear”. And don’t fight over who does the dishes, instead play a game of cribbage and the loser cleans up!
Marian and Fred are the epitome of a strong relationship. They radiate passion, love, and joy when they are together. This year they are celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary! The two of them met back in Ohio in 1950 at a dance that Fred’s college was hosting, he asked Marian if he could dance with her and “step all over her feet”. They raised their family in Ohio but eventually moved out to Washington in 1988 following their children, so they could watch their grandchildren grow up. The two of them love to adventure together from camping, to the months they spent in the Philippines and Taiwan with the Institute of Cultural Affairs.
When asked a piece of advice they might offer for a long-lasting love Marian said, “for new couples may you continue to delight in each other… have fun together, work through the hard stuff together, and respect each other”.
Friday fun fact: Bayview was built from a design conceived by architect John Graham Jr., whose most iconic design is the Space Needle commissioned for the 1962 World’s Fair in Seattle.
Bayview’s repositioning was completed in late 2019, transforming the lives of its residents and breathing new life into a classic building by bringing modern amenities into the campus while honoring its original design. The efforts earned Bayview top honors in the 2020 Senior Housing News Architecture & Design Awards “Best Repositioning” category. Full article here: www.bit.ly/BayviewSeniorHousingNews

"While scary stories of COVID and political unrest have dominated the headlines, positive and promising developments on healthy aging have slipped under the radar. Here are a few news tidbits that may help us pivot towards a more positive mindset in the midst of turmoil and chaos."

Bayview is partnered with EnviralTech, a virus-testing company based out of Eugene, Oregon, to test surfaces for COVID-19.
We chose to partner with this innovative start up as an added measure of security by providing weekly surface testing in our community. Ideally, the surface tests will not only give Bayview an indication of how well current preventative and sanitation measures in the building are working but, if the virus is detected, would allow administrators to respond immediately and hopefully prevent further exposure or even an outbreak.
More on this story here ➤➤ http://bit.ly/BayviewSurfaceTesting
Note: Since the publication of this Queen Anne & Magnolia News article on January 6, Bayview has received positive surface tests results come back. However, our most recent tests have all come back negative due to diligent sanitation efforts.
