I'm running late! Can you pass me my iced coffee? This song is a BOP! I wonder what they're doing over there...
When we talk about distracted driving, most of the time folks figure we're going to talk about cell phones. Stop the texts, your call can wait, we'd "like" you to stop posting on social - and so on, and so forth. And it's true - we've seen horiffic crashes and lives lost because of drivers who failed to focus on their singular task - driving. Instead, they sailed ahead while staring at their lap (you aren't fooling anyone by the way - no one's pants are that fascinating).
But, the reality is there is SO much more to distracted driving then cell phones. And the ugly truth is - the crashes are just as awful. Distracted driving, whether its because of using a cell phone or other inattentiveness, is still seriously injuring and killing people.
Distraction occurs when a driver voluntarily diverts attention to something not related to driving. There are four types of driver distraction:
• Visual -- looking at something other than the road
• Auditory -- hearing something not related to driving
• Manual -- manipulating something other than the wheel
• Cognitive -- thinking about something other than driving
Most distractions involve more than one of these types, with both a sensory -- eyes, ears, or
touch -- and a mental component. And yet folks continue to believe that they can multitask while driving. Guess what? Multitasking, or doing two complex activities at once, is pretty much an illusion.
In fact, neuroscientists have found that among almost all people, in nearly any enviroment or situation, multitasking is impossible. Instead, you are simply completing two different actions in a quick sequence. But, time doesn't really stop while we do things - even rapidly - and that's why crashes can occur in an instant.
It's #trainyourbrainday. We are conditioned culturally to multitask. But how long has it been since you trained your brain the art of monotasking? Let's reframe it as #mindfulness (better hashtag results). Let's train to drive mindfully. We can do more than just pay attention. Let's choose to do so with purpose, presence and non-judgement.

Did this cold 🥶 weather sneak up on you too?
Over the last 24 hours, OSP has seen 20 reportable crashes all across #Oregon. That does not include the many vehicles that have slid off the road ways 🛣.
With the snow ❄️ and freezing 🥶 temperatures, OSP would like to remind you of these winter driving tips to get you to where you need to go safe and sound.
First thing first, check your route and the weather. Use www.tripcheck.com for updated road closures and chain requirements.
✅ Drive slowly. Always adjust your speed down to account for lower traction when driving on snow or ice.
✅ Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Apply the gas slowly to regain traction and avoid skids. Don’t try to get moving in a hurry and take time to slow down for a stoplight. Remember: It takes longer to slow down on icy roads.
✅ Increase your following distance to five to six seconds. This increased margin of safety will provide the longer distance needed if you have to stop.
✅ Know your brakes. Whether you have anti-lock brakes or not, keep the heel of your foot on the floor and use the ball of your foot to apply firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal.
✅ Don’t stop if you can avoid it. There’s a big difference in the amount of inertia it takes to start moving from a full stop versus how much it takes to get moving while still rolling. If you can slow down enough to keep rolling until a traffic light changes, do it.
✅ Don’t power up hills. Applying extra gas on snow-covered roads will just make your wheels spin. Try to get a little inertia going before you reach the hill and let that inertia carry you to the top. As you reach the crest of the hill, reduce your speed and proceed downhill slowly.
✅ Don’t stop going up a hill. There’s nothing worse than trying to get moving up a hill on an icy road. Get some inertia going on a flat roadway before you take on the hill.
It is also a good idea to stay home and only go out if necessary. Even if you can drive well in bad weather, it’s better to avoid taking unnecessary risks by venturing out.
