Getting your flu shot this fall is important because it will be your best protection against COVID, says Dr. Keyna Martinez, medical director at Beacon Medical Group Bremen. “We have very good evidence that some of the severity of COVID-19 illness earlier this year was partially related to individuals getting flu and COVID at the same time, or one right after the other.” Martinez explains how right now is the best time to get vaccinated, before the flu starts circulating, to avoid a “twindemic” of flu and COVID at the same time. While it might feel like things are getting back to normal, now is the time to remain vigilant. Our region is seeing a large increase in COVID-19 cases, and Beacon hospitals are caring for the highest number of COVID-positive patients since the pandemic started. Dr. Dale Patterson, Memorial's vice president of medical affairs, cautions everyone in the community to not let your guard down in this message shared with our team members this afternoon. Continue to wear masks, social distance, and encourage others to do the same. We are all in this together.
“I think getting to know the patient – really listening and working together to come up with a plan that we both feel good about – is a strategy for success. It’s important to me to understand what they have gone through to get to where they are today.” Dr. Heather Saffel chose primary care sports medicine because it combines several of her passions: sports, the musculoskeletal system and helping people return to physical activity. "The reality is that what chaplains normally try to do – contact family and get them there as soon and as often as possible – has been flipped upside down by COVID. "Rather than having conversations about getting a patient’s loved ones physically here for them, we talk about how we can best help family members be present for their loved one when they can’t visit in person." We would like to express our deepest appreciation to the family of Teresa “Teddy” Jamison, a beloved school teacher to many children throughout our region. To honor her memory and her love of reading, her family encouraged people in the community to send donations to help with the purchase of Teddy Bears and the “Corduroy” book for kids at Beacon Children’s Hospital. We were astounded with the outpouring of love for Teresa: More than 100 donations were received from family, friends, former colleagues and students. If the temps have you in the mood for spring cleaning, please remember to bring any unwanted prescriptions and over-the-counter medications to the 525 Foundation "Drop 2 Stop" boxes at Memorial Hospital of South Bend, Elkhart General Hospital and Community Hospital of Bremen. Beacon was the first health system in the nation to collaborate with the 525 Foundation, established by Becky and Mike Savage after their teenage sons, Nick and Jack, died from an accidental overdose of a combination of alcohol and oxycodone in 2015. https://www.beaconhealthsystem.org/news/2019/12/10/beacon-partners-on-drop-2-stop-with-the-525-foundation/
WHY I GOT THE SHOT: Levon Johnson, Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce President and CEO “I’ve never gotten the flu shot, and I’ve never had the flu. So that was part of the debate for me – Why go get this vaccine as opposed to some other vaccine. But the reality is, this isn’t the flu. And listening to the science that’s out there, it just made sense to get it. There are a lot of people I haven’t been able to see that I want to get back to seeing. I also want to make sure I’m doing everything I can to keep myself safe so I’m around as long as possible. This is about our community and all of us doing our part. So get your shot." Levon Johnson is also a member of the Elkhart General Hospital Board of Directors. He hopes his words will encourage and inspire others to do their part and get the COVID shot.

Tami Slaven was fighting for her life one year ago this week. At 52, Tami had become Elkhart General Hospital’s first COVID-positive ventilated patient. We recently caught up with Tami to talk about the past year, the residual effects of COVID and how dramatically her life has changed. "I learned to make the most out of life, even if it throws you a curveball, and to keep those you love close. For those who have not had COVID — be thankful, I would not wish this on anyone." Lung (thoracic) cancer is the second most common type of cancer in men and women. While a high number of lung cancer cases happen in current or former smokers, you can still develop the disease even if you’ve never smoked. Early detection is critical to treating lung cancer in the earliest stages, so it’s important to talk with your doctor about your risk and screening options, such as Low Dose CT. https://beacon.health/3r9sE2g BEACONHEALTHSYSTEM.ORG Lung Cancer Care from Beacon

Resident recruitment looked a lot different during the pandemic. The Family Medicine Residency Program at Memorial Hospital of South Bend joined programs across the nation today as they announced their new class of residents. "We revamped our interviews to be virtual, learned how to recruit in the virtual world and adapted to many challenges and changes that the pandemic posed,” said Tina Jennings, MD, program director. “Despite these challenges, we matched the best and brightest students from around the country. We are so proud of our Class of 2024.” #MatchDay
