About

Benjamin R. Cohen, MD, FAANS, FACS, is a board-certified neurosurgeon specializing in advanced spinal treatments, including revision spine surgery, adult scoliosis, and the treatment of spinal tumors and infections. His primary goal is to help each patient overcome their neuro-spinal problems so they can get back to living life on their own terms.
At Dr. Cohen’s practice in Garden City, New York, patients receive personalized care that begins with the most conservative medical treatments before considering surgery. When surgical intervention is the best option, patients benefit from his extensive experience and dedication to performing minimally invasive procedures whenever possible.
To produce the best possible surgical and lifestyle outcomes, Dr. Cohen works in collaboration with a team of fellowship-trained professionals, including experts in orthopedic spine and plastic surgery.
Born in Philadelphia, Dr. Cohen obtained his undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, from Temple University. He received his medical degree at Chicago Medical School, where he was honored as the McGraw-Hill Book Company Outstanding Student and inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, junior selection. He also received the John J. Sheinin Research Award and the Board of Trustees Scholarship Award.
Dr. Cohen completed his general surgery internship and served as a neurological surgery resident at Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York. While there, he received the House Staff Scholarly Research Award. He then went on to complete a fellowship in complex spinal surgery at the University of Alabama.
As an author or co-author of numerous articles published in the fields of neurosurgery and complex spine surgery, Dr. Cohen has given many presentations in his areas of expertise. He’s a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
Dr. Cohen maintains active membership in seven professional medical organizations, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the American Medical Association, and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves.
Dr. Cohen also serves on the editorial board of the spine journal Surgical Neurology International. He was recently elected to the Long Island Board of the American Heart Association and was honored to be awarded Top Doctor 2019 by Castle Connolly.
