About

There is no higher calling,
no greater purpose than that of a caregiver.
Somehow, we’ve come to believe that caregiving
is just for some of us and not all of us.
Yet at our core, we are all made to love, to connect,
to extend ourselves in service of others.
The question is ... do we have the will to love, to do what it takes,
to risk ourselves in caring, even when the burden is great?
In times of happiness, in times of sadness -
we are that caregiver.
WHATEVER IT TAKES

Recently, I had the privilege of participating in a large collaborative effort via zoom, to oversee a small portion of Bickford's intensive, three-day Core Foundations training for new Bickford Family Members (BFM's). What does this mean to you? BFM's cook, clean, nurse, care for, engage with, laugh and cry with your loved one. BFM's do this with their hearts, soles and with purpose. Bickford cares so much about your loved one, we want to improve the training process to the Core, so that our BFM's can continue to provide unparalleled care. #Whateverittakes

Mother Nature awarded us with a fabulous Fall day for our Fall Prevention Clinic this week with Fox Rehab. Clinicians Lukas and Ally provided an informative presentation and those in attendance got to eat a delicious meal from Taco Chicas! Thank you Fox Rehab, Family Home Health, Hearthstone, Home Care Assistance, Ignite, and Senior Helpers and for participating!
Time for new door decorations! Fall has inspired us to start our new projects for the season! So much fun and so cute!
Suncrest Hospice dropped off some spooky Halloween goodies. Thank you, Linda!
Today was flu clinic day! Our residents began receiving their flu shot today. BFM's too, so we can help to protect our community from the flu. Nurses Shanty and Josh tried to make it more fun for all.
Look what our friends at the Algonquin Aeropostale on Randall Road did for us...their staff generously organized a donation box just for our residents. We received blankets, scarves socks and slippers for your loved ones, and they included a box of cookies for the BFM's! Thank you for thinking of us, AEROPOSTALE, we appreciate you!
Oh yes we DID! We bought heaters for your porch visit with your loved one during the cooler weather. Starting tomorrow, Kimber will be able to provide some extra warmth along with her smiling eyes as she escorts your loved one to you.

The Bickford Trio visited Ignite Medical Resort, a brand new luxury rehabilitation center in McHenry. Lauren and her entire staff were kind enough to give us a full tour of their state of the art facility. We couldn’t resist posing in front of their living wall. (Shanty wanted to take it home with her!) Looking forward to partnering with you Ignite!
Our daily exercise class is very popular. It is nice to do some stretching and breathing exercises right after breakfast it is great way to start off the day. Daisy the pup also attends the class but she only observes which we also encourage. There are times a new Bickford family member are not quite sure what our class is about so they will observe and shortly after we find them joining in as it is a great social time for all. This may not hold true for our lazy Daisy. :)
Do I hear the ice cream man? Yes you do! Our ice cream man was back to visit our Bickford family. His ice cream cart comes equipped with playing the ice cream melody we all love and remember and of coarse delicious frozen treats. He visitEd each apartment and the residents enjoy picking out their favorite Treat. It is wonderful hearing their comments like “I remember when“ or “This will hit the spot”, but my favorite is “Boy my ice cream was never this cute”!
Patti and Brea from Kindred Home Health and Hospice was kind enough to drop off the ingredients to make a yummy fall treat for our residents. We made apple cider pie-scream. This creation tasted just like a slice of hot apple pie! We poured hot apple cider over a scoop of vanilla ice cream and topped it off with a drizzle of carmel syrup. Yum! Thank you again for your kind sponsorship.
Pajama day was fun for all. Not only did some of our residents enjoy staying in their pajamas all day our Bickford family members showed up for work with P.J.’s on. Nothing is better than comfy Monday!
Beverly said coloring is a great way to relax and at the same time chat with friends. Not to mention your pictures are beautiful!
We reversed trick or treating today by bringing candy to our Bickford family’s apartments. The residents were saying “trick or treat”! We had so much fun seeing their eyes light up as we brought treats to them this year!
Happy Halloween! Our residents were our judges for our costume contest during our Halloween Bash. Danielle won for best costume -Where’s Waldo, Kimberly won most creative- Button candy script and Rob won for funniest - cow. The residents really enjoyed themselves.
The activity department started early in the morning preparing for our Halloween Party. We began by making hotdog mummies, spooky Rice Krispie treats, and mango punch we were happy it truly looked like pumpkin punch!
Local neighborhood resident Tammi and her daughter have generously created a blanket (for front porch visits) and holiday goodie bag drive on facebook, for all of our residents. I have copied the link below hoping you will be able to see the event she created. Thank you, Tammi and Lexi for your kindness and huge hearts. https://www.facebook.com/events/970471086795353
Chaplain Mark lead his service on zoom for our Bickford family when he was not able to visit in person. The residents look forward to his service every Friday. Thank you Mark for that you do!
Excited to share the news! Bickford and Fox Rehab are working with St. Elizabeth Ann Seton church to provide enough groceries for 8 families in the Crystal Lake neighborhood to have a bountiful Thanksgiving dinner this year. Will you consider helping us help them?

Daisy gets love from everyone who lives here. She is a great addition to our Bickford family. Her human Mama, Almarie one of our resident shares her pup with her friends and we love her for it!
Creating a haunted chocolate cookie house was definitely a challenge but a lot of fun. I think we spent more time laughing at our progress then actually building the house. It’s all in good fun and yum!

Today was “wear your favorite sports team jersey day.” The CNA’s decided it was team Bickford day and all wore their Bickford sweatshirts. RN Beatriz and our CNA’s told me they were blessed and thankful to be here. In truth, we are thankful for them!
Patty and the Algonquin Trader Joe’s crew generously donated groceries to our Thanksgiving Food Drive. Thanks for helping us help 8 families have a Happy Thanksgiving.
RNC Shanty educating caregivers on the importance of COVID testing: why we test and how we test. There are many teachable moments when it comes to caring safely and lovingly for our beloved residents.
Our Bickford families are beyond generous! Every time I empty the Thanksgiving Food Drive box, more food magically appears! Thank you, All, for your kindness and big hearts. Together, we will all ensure eight families in Crystal Lake have a bountiful Thanksgiving.
I wanted to share this special photo. This was the first thing I saw coming into work today. Seeing Daisy sleeping by the fire in our Bickford living room at 7am brought this comforting feeling like I just came home. Truth is I did. Coming to work with my Bickford family is a home away from home.
Our beautiful flags were flying high in the beautiful weather we had for November. Thank you again Pillars of Freedom for all that you do!
Nancy Haynes one of our wonderful entertainers offer her Veteran’s show for our residents on YouTube. She was amazing as always, we loved it!
Another wonderful success story with our partner Fox Rehab! Ally, a Fox Rehab Physical Therapist, has been working with Stephen to help him achieve his goals. She and other dedicated Fox clinicians have been instrumental in helping many of our residents gain strength and achieve their goals. Fox also provides occupational and speech therapy.
Thank you Linda from Suncrest hospice for sponsoring our wine & cheese social distancing event. The residents enjoyed the delicious choices!
Betty’s son Don has been a great friend to many of our residents here at Bickford. He attended our men’s group and shared many interesting stories with our men here. One of his stories had to do with his “baby” a 67 Chevy Nova SS. He owed this vehicle for 48 years, he use to race it in the past before restoring back to a street car. He promised that when his remodel of the car was complete that he would drive to Bickford for everyone to see. And he did! Even though we need to social distance we were still able to enjoy the view. Thank you Don for sharing!
Miss Lillian likes to tickle the ivories for us every once in a while. She plays wonderfully and fills our home with beautiful music. (She removed her mask so she could see the keys and on it went when she was finished making magic.)
From the children of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton church‘s parish to our residents. These homemade Thanksgiving cards are a small sampling of the many creative and beautiful cards the children made.
Tammi’s Thanksgiving goody bags were a huge hit! Everyone was surprised, excited, curious and grateful for the kindness. Some of the comments I was asked to share with Tammi: “May God bless her and her family.” “I have never received such kindness from someone I’ve never met. I wish her a Thanksgiving to remember.” “How do I repay her?” “This is so nice. Such a kind gesture.” “But I didn’t get her anything!” “What a lovely thing she and her daughter did. For ALL of us?! I don’t know what to say.” Tammi, Lexi, and everyone who contributed, you made our residents’ day. Thank you.
Tammi, her daughter Lexi and friend Kate stopped by today with 60 Thanksgiving goody bags, one for each Bickford resident. They wanted to give our residents a surprise holiday gift. Inside each bag, packed with love and thoughtful consideration, was a chapstick, lotion, hand sanitizer, socks, gloves, tissue and candy. Tammi sorted the bags to make sure each one was meant especially for either a gentleman or a lady resident. Thank you, Tammi, for everything you did!

Stopped in to thank the caregivers at Fair Oaks and was greeted by a beautiful Winter Wonderland, courtesy of Jenni, at the front desk. A wonderful way to bring holiday cheer to her patients and staff.
Even our feathered residents need to see the doctor once in a while. Mike took Billy Bickford to his veterinarian today. Daisy, peaking around the corner, was relieved it was not her turn!!!
I am thankful for the amazing team at Bickford of Crystal Lake who enrich the happiness of their residents. They made the top 10! Congratulations! - Andy Eby, Owner/Caregiver of Bickford Senior Living
Liz and family brought us delicious Fannie May chocolates and a beautiful card in support of our caregivers for their efforts during this challenging time. Liz, it’s you who needs to be thanked for bringing us your loved one, for being patient with us while we navigate the COVID protocols, for entrusting us with her care. Thank you Liz.
It’s never too late to be thankful...we want to thank Hilda for the time, energy and love she put into these cookies made especially for our residents AND Bickford Family Members/staff on Thanksgiving.

Creativity flowing for our door decorating contest. More to come on the results...
Miss Elaine is always offering to lend a hand, and her favorite task is putting out Christmas decorations. We appreciate her eye for design, and we had fun working together!
Kudos to Rob for all of his hard work adding a little extra cheer this year with exterior Christmas lights at the roofline. Rob, you light up our residents’ lives.
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
Special delivery for Miss Theresa. This beautiful floral arrangement made her day!
Santa and his elves have been busily decorating Christmas trees!
Thanks to Catherine at Bloom ‘n Toss, an organization that re-purposes and donates flowers to senior living communities and other entities, we have received many beautiful bouquets to display for our residents. Beautiful flowers from beautiful hearts.
Yummy gourmet donuts from Miss Virginia for our BFMs! What a nice surprise on a Monday morning.
First In Line, Bickford Senior Living of Crystal Lake is receiving the vaccine for residents and staff!
Kindred Home Health and Kindred Hospice stopped by with Christmas goodies and items for our hot cocoa bar for the residents. Thank you Patti and Brea for helping make our residents’ day!
Nurse Anna’s mom Kathy insisted we get Krispy Kreme donuts today! She knows the way to our hearts! Thank you Kathy!
Green! Red! Peppermint! Can I eat it before dinner? This ought to be illegal it’s too much fun! Okay I’ll decorate a cookie but you can do it for me. I’ll have all the colors! I tried to make a tree on my cookie but I got too much green - it’s artistic alright, it’s abstract! These are just some of the many memorable comments I heard during our cookie decorating activity today. I LOVE each and every one of our residents. Each and every cookie was unique just like the artist.
Santa and his Elves were spreading Christmas cheer early last week to our senior living industry partners: Family Home Health, Kindred, Suncrest, UltraCare, Baird & Warner, Visiting Angels, Transitions, Deer Path of Huntley, Fox Rehab. Helping each other help seniors is what it’s all about.
Last week Paul, one of our residents, provided us with lunch to thank us for our care. He and his family were able to convince Subway to wrap each sandwich for us individually, making it a much safer option. Thank you Paul and family for your thoughtfulness.
Heli, a high school student in Crystal Lake, created Christmas cards for each on of our residents. Thank you for choosing Bickford for your service project!
More decorated doors...
Creative and thoughtful Christmas cards made by our friends at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton church were placed in every resident mailbox this week. Spreading Christmas cheer.
One of the most heart warming experiences for Bickford was the group of Christmas carolers who stood outside the residents’ windows singing and waving yesterday. Kathy, you and the friends from church sounded lovely and brought warmth to our branch. Thank you for standing out in the cold to uplift the spirits of our residents.
I delivered these gorgeous full size and lap quilts to residents in the middle of the night this week. I was playing Secret Santa on behalf of Miss Pat and the Mission Quilters who work year round to make these works of art. The surprise and delight the residents expressed when they woke up to see their new quilt filled my heart. We appreciate you and your group Pat.
We were the lucky recipients of these beautiful pillows painted by Brooke, an adult with autism. She loves to bring joy to others by creating these unique designs and thought Bickford would enjoy them. Thank you Brooke.
Lisa Raupp, friend of Bickford, took the time to assemble her own gifts and accept donations as presents for our residents. Thank you, Lisa!
The kindness of our community neighbors has helped to lift the spirits of our residents this Christmas season. Tammi, her daughter Lexi, and their friends who created Thanksgiving goodie bags, also came together to create Christmas goodie bags for every one of our residents. Many residents remembered their kindness last month and wanted me to be sure to share their sentiments with Tammi: “I hope she is as blessed as she has made me feel.” - Mr. Joe. “This is from the same lady? She doesn’t even KNOW us! That was very generous!” - Miss Berdie. “I would like to meet her some day to personally thank her.” - Mr. Paul. “Well bless their hearts for doing all of it.” - Miss Jeannie.
One of the many strong, positive adjectives that come to mind when I think of my Bickford Family Members during this challenging time...
We have such wonderful, supportive families who are always lifting us up with kind words, well wishes, and thoughtful, creative and fun mementos. Thank you Miss Margie’s family for being an extension of our Bickford family.

We had a socially distanced full house for RNC Shanty’s in-service with JourneyCare’s nurse Monika. Monika discussed quality end of life care and how to honor the wishes of the loved one and their family members. Thank you for your insight and education, Monika.
Bickford believes in education, information and communication. Please join us for our live Town Hall event from the comfort of your home this Tuesday, January 19th at 12:30. Have all your COVID vaccine questions answered. Register here: http://bit.ly/3i1Lo0P
5 more days!
6 days and counting...
Yes it does! Bickford is protecting its residents and staff by providing the vaccine. 7 days and counting...
Bickford Senior Living is doing its part to protect seniors. 1725 vaccines administered and counting!
Bickford Family Member Christine and Ally of Fox Rehab, whom we consider part of the Bickford family, express their reason for getting the vaccine: good health and safety of self and others.
So proud of our BFMs for putting seniors first; considering their health and the positive outcomes if everyone gets the vaccine.
Thanks to our wonderful Walgreens pharmacists, everyone got their vaccine in record time.
Sign me up and line me up! #IGOTTHESHOT
Excitement spread throughout Bickford today as residents and BFMs alike were given their first dose of the COVID vaccine. Miss Virginia was the first resident to receive it. When asked how she felt, she said, “I feel fine, I don’t feel any different than I always do!” Jeannie was the first BFM, and she took with a smile on her face.
I would like to introduce you to Shelly Hill, our new Administrative Assistant. She has worked with seniors for the last 10 years and truly enjoys it. Shelly loves spending time helping her team, listening to residents’ life stories and building relationships with their family members. She has raised 3 children, lives in McHenry and in her spare time likes to do yoga, travel, go boating and spending time with her family! Welcome Shelly!
Miss Marian said it best... “If everybody does it, everybody can be healthy.”
Handsome Mike proudly stated he wore the right t-shirt to express his why. He has been working hard with Fox Rehab therapist Ally to get stronger. He hoisted that board like it was a feather. Between his Superman strength and getting the vaccine, at this rate he will live to be 100!
More “My Why” for taking the vaccine...
Finding out why our seniors wanted to be vaccinated was eye-opening. It’s important to understand their view point so we can continue to serve and protect them. Please read their “My Why.”
It has been an absolute pleasure getting to know our new resident Michelle. We enjoyed a day of pampering and having a manicure.
It's not too late to move in and be vaccinated at Bickford of Crystal Lake. Move in before 2/8 and get the vaccine!

Bickford has beautiful, furnished respite stay apartments. All you have to do is move in and we will take care of you or your loved one!
A shout out to Kindred home health and hospice for your kind support for sponsorships and treating us on Activity Professionals Week thank you!
"Handsome Mike" has worked diligently with physical therapist Ally and occupational therapist Lukas on becoming more independent and participating in activities held at Bickford with Rhonda and Mike. When he started with FOX, he was in a wheelchair and unable to safely walk to the dining hall for meals, required assistance for ADLs, and was frequently falling. Currently, Mike is independent with the use of his walker for going to the dining hall and exercise class and has improved his balance and endurance significantly. In honor of Valentine's Day, we asked him what he loved and his response was "family". We are so proud of how hard he has worked and what he has achieved with FOX Rehabilitation.
We celebrated our February birthdays with delicious cupcakes provided by Jill from Brightstar care. Thank you for your generous support our residents enjoyed your treat!
It’s time to razzle and dazzle those nails! Our manicure activity is a great time for “girl chat”. This is one of my favorite things to do with the residents as it allows special time to share life stories and really get to know one another. The ladies love to show off their nails to their friends which brings more ladies to request this special time. It’s a win - win for me for more story time!
I am feeling extremely thankful for our caregivers, nurses, CNAs, my team, and our leadership's guidance through the twists and turns of navigating an ever changing COVID landscape. With mitigation measures changing on a weekly and sometimes daily basis, as dictated by the CDC, the CMS, the IDPH and the MCDH, Bickford Senior Living of Crystal Lake never took its eye off the main goal: keeping our residents safe! I am proud to say we are officially 10 days COVID-free.

What a romantic way to spend Valentine’s Day: chocolate, popcorn, pretzels and a romantic movie! Thank you Gina and Querhammer & Flagg for dropping this off for our residents today!
I stopped by to bring our friends at Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home a little Valentine’s Day treat. Kelli and Gina have a wonderful team of caring people who have indirectly felt the negative impact of COVID and have been counseling families through this challenging time with expert grace.
Miss Marian wanted to thank us for all we do so her family dropped off these delicious heart cookies. They know the way to our hearts! Thank you Marian & Family!!
Handsome Mike and his daughter Sue and son in law Paul strike again! They have big hearts and are always thinking of ways to thank our BFMs. Every day is better because of YOU!
You've met Bickford of Crystal Lake's newest BFM Carlos. Now meet Sarah Basit of Parents Alliance Employment Project(PAEP). Carlos's journey to Bickford began with Sarah. She is the Lead Employability Instructor for PAEP at Project SEARCH, Northwestern Medicine Woodstock Hospital. Project SEARCH is an out-of-school program focused on providing education and training to young adults ages 18 to 24 who have intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. The project's primary goal is to prepare each intern for competitive employment upon completion of the nine-month, skill-building experience. When Carlos graduated from his internship under Sarah's guidance and mentorship, he decided he wanted to apply his skills and work somewhere with a purpose. He found Bickford and the rest is history! We are grateful to Sarah and Project SEARCH for helping Carlos find his way to us, and we are happy to partner with PAEP at Project SEARCH. Check out their video here: https://youtu.be/mXTyORI362E
Meet our newest BFM Carlos. Carlos has held internships at Northwestern Medicine Woodstock Hospital Food and Nutrition department as a Dishwasher and the Guest Services department as a Front Desk Assistant. Carlos is known as the "Happiest Dishwasher" around. His love for helping others inspired him to apply for a position with us! When he is not working, he can be found watching Ellen or Full House, hanging out with his dog Luna, or going to his two favorite restaurants: Around the Clock and Tommy's. Welcome to the Bickford team, Carlos!
We are so thankful to Deacon Ken from St Elizabeth Ann Seton church for placing ashes on the foreheads of our residents who wanted to participate in Ash Wednesday. Assisting our residents in the honoring of their faith is a big part of the Bickford culture.
Proud of our team!
Nothing like a few dozen paczkis to fill our hearts and tummies on a cold winter day. Thank you to Sarah and the team at Revere Court for treating us.
Wonderful art to decorate your apartment with! Marble painting is one of our favorite crafts to do as they are always unique and beautiful!
Happy Valentines’ Day from our Bickford house to you!
Our friends Brea and Patti from Kindred Home Health and Hospice provided valentine treats for our Valentine bingo event. Each resident was given a beautiful valentine bag of sweet treats! Our bfm’s also were treated with a valentine bowl of snacks, drinks and treats. We also appreciate your kind support and friendship!
Today marks a milestone: we are 31 days COVID-free!
Drum roll please! Shelly and the Drummers had a good time exercising to the beat of their drumming today. Mr. Mike said, “We were like a rock band that had been playing together for years! It’s the best activity I’ve done since I’ve been here!” It was so popular, everyone wants to do it again. Your wish is our command.

What a wonderful gift to our Bickford home. Thanks to Glenn Anderl, for donating these books and wanting our residents to find as much joy in these great reads, as he's had. Some are even signed by the author, how very special.
Excited for tomorrow! We will be making green tutus for the babies in the NICU with FOX Rehabilitation, Family Home Health Network, and Ignite Medical Resorts.
We have our first recipient and model of Tutus that our residents made last week. This little gal was born on St Patty's Day! Thanks to new mom and baby who were wiling to pose and to OB Manager Mary for sharing the photo.
Bickford Senior Living, Heritage Woods and White Oaks had a little St. Patty’s Day fun doing the Irish gig with Lucky Leprechaun Janet yesterday. We appreciate the grab ‘n go lunch and being able to work together for the benefit of finding safe placement for seniors.
Buzz Cuts and Beehives, our Bickford salon was open for business today. Lori, our stylist, was making our residents happy with her expert hair services. Miss Elaine was so relaxed, she took a nap under the dryer!

Bob has done an amazing job and has worked so hard with his physical therapist Ally Dedic. Initially, he was not walking with staff and used his wheelchair for all mobility. Upon discharge, he is walking up and down the hallways with staff to and from the dining room and has improved greatly with his ability to participate in transfers. In the spirit of St. Patrick's Day, since Bob is not able to communicate why he feels lucky he has Ally as his physical therapist, Ally wants to make it known that SHE is lucky to have him as a patient. From day one, he would always greet Ally with a smile brightening her day and shows so much excitement when he walks around the hallway with her while smiling at other residents. He brings so much joy to those around him.
