JOKE OF THE WEEK
The local news station was interviewing an 80-year-old lady because she had just gotten married for the fourth time.
The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80, and then about her new husband's occupation.. "He's a funeral director," she answered. "Interesting," the newsman thought... He then asked her if she wouldn't mind telling him a little about her first three husbands and what they did for a living.
She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years. After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, explaining that she had first married a banker when she was in her 20's, then a circus ringmaster when in her 40's, and a preacher when in her 60's, and now - in her 80's - a funeral director.
The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and asked why she had married four men with such diverse careers.
(Wait for it...)
- She smiled and explained, "I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go."
Now that you know all the fun facts of laughter...we invite you to visit our page and find our joke of the week. We challenge you to try to read the jokes with a straight face. In fact, we dare you!
Visiting the Edgebrook Farmer’s Market was a delicious adventure
A little toliet paper and some ingenuity and voila-you have a decorative pumpkin for your home.
We stay young because we are always trying new things. Dorothy played Left,Center, Right dice game for the first time. Callnit beginner’s luck, she walked away the big winner.
Our Giant Connect Four is a hit. Yom has proven himself to be a great strategist. He was an unbeatable opponent for the entire time that we played.
At Bickford we believe in hiring “51 percenters”-these are special caregivers that go above and beyond to enrich happiness. Dawn and Nicole make Bickford of Rockford a happier place ❤️#51percenter
JOKE OF THE WEEK...
One of our new residents, Carliene, just had a birthday. She shared an amazing gall cake with everyone of her new friends!
October is here and it’s time for Halloween movies and popcorn with friends. Hocus Pocus is playing during our movie matinee today.
What a great day to support our local PD. Dawn and our great residents served up coffee and Bundt cakes as a small gesture of appreciation for keeping our community safe. Thank you RPD! ❤️

Thank you Bickford of Rockford for your Coffee with a Cop Drive Thru!
Shelli and Dawn volunteered at Midway Village for their first drive thru Halloween event.
Our very own Community Relations Director, Shelli, attended several days of training called “Sherpa Boot Camp”. At the end of the training the person who was open to the process, who showed their true selves and who tried to put into practice all they had learned won the “Sherpa” tshirt. Out of all the participants there-Shelli won the shirt. Way to go Shelli!!!!
Joke of the week:
Two factory workers are talking. The woman says, "I can make the boss give me the day off." The man replies, "And how would you do that?" The woman says, "Just wait and see." She then hangs upside down from the ceiling. The boss comes in and says, "What are you doing?" The woman replies, "I'm a light bulb." The boss then says, "You've been working so much that you've gone crazy. I think you need to take the day off." The man starts to follow her and the boss says, "Where are you going?" The man says, "I'm going home, too. I can't work in the dark."
Wishing you a Happy Boss's Day, with great appreciation for everything you do, Jenn!
Our candy bags have been stamped with approval from our residents! We will be passing out candy and volunteering at Midway Village tomorrow!
John stopped by for a nice conversation this afternoon and to make some copies. As a Director, some days are busy full of meetings and various tasks. I truly enjoy one on one moments like these with our residents. Thank you for making my day John and letting me take such a nice picture of you!
We are super thankful for our partnership with Fox Rehab! This added rehabilitation service is huge for our residents and so many have benefitted already. Also, the cookies aren’t too bad either! Thank you Fox!
The first official picture of our Tuesday & Friday Poker club! Great group of folks enjoying a Friday morning!
Joe had a career in working with cancer cells. To enrich his happiness, Dawn held a science lab today!
They all had a great time identifying objects under the microscope!
Some days all it takes is a little butterscotch!
Ask Loren, he knows.
Fall is in the air at Bickford!
Sharing a nice conversation over a delicious treat! Thank you for always sharing your wisdom and your great sense of humor-we love you Ellie!
“Many hands make light work”. We’re so grateful that we have residents who are always willing to lend a helping hand.
Halloween Socials are so much fun. We had food, music, and even a reading of THE RAVEN by Edgar Allan Poe. There were a few brave souls who are willing to get their picture taken
These gentlemen just came back from an extended stay on an island (That was only supposed to be a three hour tour). Because of their misfortune they have become land lovers and lucky for us they stopped in today to get a tour of all the Bickford has to offer. They definitely left impressed and we expect to hear from them very soon!
Danny, our Maintenance Director couldn’t make it in today! He sent his alter ego to do his job!
Happy Halloween ????
Spooky Stories with Dawn today! She read from a book written by a local author, entitled “Haunted Rockford!”
Ohhhhhhh creepy!!
Shelli’s working hard on our referral marketing event! We’ve teamed up with Vinny’s Pizza and will be treating our community partners to a nice meal on Election Night! Great job Shelli!
Let us show you our community with a LIVE tour from the comfort of your home. Call today for a tour of our branch!

It was a great day at the branch celebrating the birthday of this gem! Thank you for making Bickford a happier place. Enjoy your bundtinis and your evening. You deserve it!
In March, our Life Enrichment Coordinator Dawn’s grandma passed away. Today was Dawn’s birthday and the first time in 46 years she wouldn’t get a phone call from her Gigi singing Happy Birthday. This is only one example of how Bickford is unique. Bickford staff and residents are connected like a family. We strive to enrich the happiness of residents on a daily basis, but today, the residents adopted Dawn and became her grandparents and enriched HER happiness
Betty cleans our community everyday with a smile! Here’s proof!
On Wednesday’s we wear pink! Dorothy is proudly showing off her nails! Happiness comes in all shapes and sizes!
One of Elli’s gifts yesterday was this home made turkey from her niece. Ellie was tickled when she received it and insisted we give it a home in the main part of the building so everyone could enjoy it.
Congratulations to our team here in Rockford as we had our Annual Survey from the Illinois Department of Public Health last week and we completed the survey with ZERO Deficiencies! Great job to all of our BFMs who work so hard to care for our Bickford Family everyday. You are doing an amazing job!
Meet our Veterans. They are pictured with their certificate and pins they received as appreciation from both Bickford and Heartland Hospice. Thank you for your service.
Learning a new game with new friends is always a great way to spend the day.
As the cases of the Coronavirus spread through our city and state, we want to send love and prayers to all who have been affected. We take COVID very seriously at Bickford. In an effort to stay ahead of the virus, all staff will be tested twice per week until further notice. Just another attempt to keep our vibrant residents safe and happy!
“Whatever it takes”
Yesterday Winnebago County reported an 18.5% positivity rate! This is a friendly reminder to mask up, wash your hands, and keep your distance!
We are so thankful we have been able to keep our Bickford Home COVID FREE! Thank you to our residents, BFMs (staff) and our family members for all your effort in keeping us safe throughout this pandemic! We love you all!
Ither awesome happenings in the branch today??? The podiatrist is here and Marie was so happy she was the first in line.
Just when Guiseppina thought her birthday celebration was over, Aaron, one of our awesome CNA’s brought her flowers for her special day.
We have so much to be grateful for at the branch. Today, we are celebrating our friend Guiseppina’s 100th Birthday. She is a beautiful soul who doesn’t like a lot of fuss over her. Tanti Auguri! Many blessings to you this upcoming year????
This!
Heartwarming and beautiful.
Enriching Happiness is just what we do!
Chef David, Kelly and Fatima are discussing breakfast plans to ensure all our resident family is served a hot, healthy, made from scratch meal! All three were sharing how each individual resident likes their breakfast served.
Fatima was just one of the many hands on deck today as we delivered the first meals to our resident’s rooms this morning. Service with a smile is always the best practice!
There is no problem too big or too small that we wont’t help our residents solve. Jen did not hesitate to help Tom and put him at ease.
After receiving her Thanksgiving leaf in her apartment, I asked Carol what she was thankful for this year. She said she was thankful for all she has here at Bickford.
I’m thankful for Carol.
Carliene stuck to her exercise routine regardless of it being Thanksgiving! I asked her if she takes a day off and she said “No!”
Determined and Darling!
Our Thanksgiving tradition of taking down Fall decorations and starting to put up our Holiday decorations takes teamwork! Tom offered to help and we made a great duo! Thank you Tom!
Tammy and Sandy passing out the Thanksgiving leaves!
Since today is Thanksgiving, we are celebrating all we are thankful for! Each BFM ( Bickford Family Member or staff ) wrote on a leaf why they are thankful for our residents! They were delivered today along with pen pal letters from other seniors! Tammy and Sandy hand delivered these to each apartment! Diane approached me with tears in her eyes she was so thankful for this!
Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours! We are extremely thankful for our resident family.
Shout out to Kelly & Dawn! They were both EXTRA SPECIAL hero’s today to several of our residents and our BFM team! Both doing WHATEVER IT TAKES at all times!!
Darlene and Dawn! Touring the building and getting to know neighbors and friends together! Darlene is pure joy and her and Dawn are besties now!
Tom had a FaceTime call today with his daughter, Barb! Tom enjoyed the call until his eye caught the basketball game on TV. Tom was a basketball star back at East high school so we all understand why his attention was taken for the exciting game on TV.
Holiday Christmas Photos coming soon!
Rodney and Kristin made a friendly bet on a football game. Kristin is normally a Bears fan but as you can see Rodney won and Kristin paid up!
Rodney got to gloat all day and Kristin took it like a champ!
When you witness music come alive in someone it changes the way you feel about music from that point on. Carole was a music teacher for a Rockford High School. She is timid about playing the piano because she has forgotten some of the notes. Today when we asked her to play some Christmas Carols and had the sheet music she began to play. She kept improving song after song. Residents came out of their apartments to see where the music was coming from. She was thrilled with the applause she received.
We are extremely excited to share our stories of being vaccinated! This is just a small token we can do to get back to hugs and face to face relationships!
Too good of a story not to share! This young lady of 103 years old needed some slight assistance today and I was there to give it. When we got to Ellie’s apartment she asked if I could move her doorstop. As I did I noticed it was a brick! When I inquired, Ellie shared with me how she used to teach grammar school at Peace School. When the building was demolished she received the brick with the croquet covering! What a great story!!
Entering Heaven
Three men died on Christmas Eve and were met by Saint Peter at the pearly gates.
"In honor of this holy season," Saint Peter said, "You must each possess something that symbolizes Christmas to get into heaven."
The first man fumbled through his pockets and pulled out a lighter. He flicked it on. "It represents a candle," he said. "You may pass through the pearly gates," Saint Peter said.
The second man reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of keys. He shook them and said, "They're bells." Saint Peter said, "You may pass through the pearly gates."
The third man started searching desperately through his pockets and finally pulled out a pair of women's glasses.
St. Peter looked at the man with a raised eyebrow and asked, "And just what do those symbolize?"
The man replied, "They're Carol's."
Jen is the winner of our guess the peppermints contest. She guessed 110 and there were 113! She shared her mint winnings with the building.
What do you do when you find costumes in a box? You put them on of course and go through the building surprising BFM’s and residents! What is the special occasion? It’s Tuesday!
One on One nail painting with Dawn! Darlene loved getting her nails done today. She shared memories of her daughter & granddaughters taking her to the nail salon! Darlene said- every time they went they’d take me!
We are committed to our resident family! Flu shots, coronavirus vaccines, and whatever else it takes to keep our loved ones safe!
I heard lots of laughter and good conversation coming from our Bickford Library! I arrived and found Josephine and Dawn doing some Christmas crafts together! The crafts are adorable but the laughter was infectious!
We are running a daily Bingo. Residents receive numbers daily to mark on their sheets. The first two that het a Bingo receive a prize. Josephine and Kathy both won! Now that we have two winners we are starting over again.
Carole received two surprises when her sister in law came to visit. The first was an art piece made with Carole’s mother’s jewelry. The second was an album that Carole recorded with her choir at East High School. She began “directing” when she heard the record being played. Carole was visibly happy at the end of the visit.
Bob, a brand new resident, had a long day at a doctors appointment in Chicago. He was too tired to get up and tell Kristin which shirts he liked! Kristin fixed it quickly and told Bob not to move- she would bring them to him!
Whatever it takes to make our residents happy!
Move-in to our branch and get vaccinated!
As of today, Bickford of Rockford has had ZERO cases of Covid and we are all very excited to get vaccinated. If for no other reason than to ensure the safety of our Bickford Family!
Did you know we are family owned? Mary Bickford was the first resident to live at Bickford! Mary is the very reason Bickford exists and the example behind our manifesto~ whatever it takes to make our family happy!
Special delivery for staff-The Eckhardt family sent this treat bundle all the way from Florida!
Our residents are the very best. They are always looking for ways to help out in any way they can!
We had a visitor today. Birdie is an 11 week old Goldendoodle who has stolen our hearts (and has stolen plenty of kisses).
Who has the happiest seniors despite Covid restrictions? We do!
This Christmas is unconventional for sure. We tried to make the best out of a less than ideal situation by preparing Christmas gifts that were delivered to the residents on Christmas morning. They received boxes of fruit with cookies, chocolate, peppermints, and handmade tiny stockings (Made by Gail Barton). There was also an ornament attached and last but not least, each included a Christmas card from someone in the community.
We have two winners again for our daily Bingo game. Carliene and Josephine! This is Josephine’s second time winning.
Christmas definitely has a way of spreading magic! Bob, who struggles verbally and only speaks a few words at a time, approached Dawn and had a conversation! He told her she “does everything around here” and he was SO right about that. Bob made our day but won our hearts immediately!

It’s Vaccination Day!!
Bickford of Bexley’s first COVID-19 vaccination clinic starts this morning! Please celebrate with us by liking and sharing this video!
Lyrics are inspired by “For the first time in forever” from Disney’s Frozen!
Lyrics:
It’s Vaccination Day!
The window is open, so's that door
I didn't know they did that anymore
Who knew we could save so many lives?
For months I've roamed these empty halls
Why are there so many zoom calls
Finally, there’s vaccines in this place!
There'll be actual, real, live people
It'll be totally strange
But wow, am I so ready for this change!
'Cause for the first time in forever
There'll be music, there'll be light
For the first time in forever,
I’ll be holding family tight.
Don't know if I'm dreaming, so pinch me
Cause the vaccine’s here today!
'Cause for the first time in forever
We’ll celebrate this day!
Shelly loves to get her hair done. Today, Betty (our amazing housekeeper) had a little extra time and decided to braid Shelly’s hair for her. She was happy with the end result.
