On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas and announced that enslaved people were now free. That announcement came more than 2 1/2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. So technically the 250,000 enslaved people in Texas were already free - but they weren’t aware and no one was in a rush to tell them!
