Yesterday I talked a little about the history of stone coated steel and counter battens and batten system over existing roofing materials. A few people asked about the barge detail. The barge can be done with no bend gable metals, bending up the panel (both require VRidge trim) or it can be installed with a methods call 3D bends which simulates the butt end of a wood shake and is sometimes referred to as trimless rake on a batten or counter batten system.
This short video clip shows how the 3D Gable Re-Roof metal protects the barge and build up. Tilcor Craftsman Shake panels are cut and bent on a taper and interlocked into the 3D metal.
In addition to showing the barge installation, look at how strong the installer is walking on the Tilcor Craftsman Shake profile. It’s strong, walkable and can be installed with nails or screws.
A batten system does not need to be used when re-roofing over existing roofing materials it’s only an option, but a great option when the roof slope is above an 8/12.

Damage to roofing systems due to high winds is known as uplift. It is when wind gets underneath and lifts the roof up, or up and off.
Not all metal roofing systems are installed to protect against uplift, and none of the other available roofing materials are.
