Bill brought his handicapped dog, Rosie, into the store for a brief visit over the weekend after her grooming session. She was happy to pose for selfies and show off her new "do" with Halloween ribbons.
It's that time of year again when migratory birds will be passing through our area providing opportunities for good bird watching. So clean the bird feeders, fill them up and you may find visitors stopping on their way to wherever. The Audubon Society also encourages folks to adopt a laissez-faire approach regarding fall clean up in your yard. Leave the seed heads on flowers like coneflowers as the seeds provide a natural source of food for birds. Leave other dead plants and leaf litter as they they provide places for birds to forage for food like insect larvae. Finally, consider building a brush pile of fallen tree branches to help shelter birds and other backyard wildlife from inclement weather and predators.

Bill shares this photo of his two senior collies. Cody, on the left, recently lost the use of his legs over the New Year holiday. Rosie hasn't had the use of her legs for several months. So, now Bill has two handicapped dogs. He put them out on his back deck to enjoy the great weather. While they can't run around anymore, they enjoy watching the birds, squirrels and kids next door. Rosie is 11 years old and Cody is estimated to be around 16-17 years old (over 100 in human years!). Both dogs are rescued pets.

With sadness we offer condolences to Bill and his wife on the loss of 2 of their 3 dogs this week. Their beloved collies, Rosie and Cody, suffered unrelated health issues and passed within days of each other. Both dogs were senior rescues and had been part of Bill's "pack" for several years. Cody, shown on the right in this photo taken several years ago, lived with Bill for 7 years after his adoption, making him the rescue dog that lived with him the longest after adoption and the oldest when he passed (estimated age was 16 years).

Merrilee and I would like to sincerely thank everyone for the kind words and expressions of sympathy over the loss of our collies, Cody and Rosie. We have been touched by the amazing number of folks who have reached out to us over the past several days. While the collies will always be in our hearts, our remaining dog, Ethan, needs a companion. We hope to be able to open our home to another "rescue" dog in the near future.

Wild birds have a hard time finding natural food sources that may be frozen or buried under snow or ice in winter months. For those folks who stock wild bird feeders, we send a reminder that there are hawks in our area. Hawks are natural predators and eat other birds. You may find hawks hanging around your feeders looking for a meal. A bird friendly web site offers a few suggestions to help protect your backyard birds. If possible, place the feeders no more than 10 feet from a dense tree or thick shrubbery so that birds can flee to safety in the branches if they feel threatened. Prevent hawks from seeing available prey by placing the feeders in lower branches of a tree or under other "canopies" such as umbrellas or awnings. Finally, avoid ground feeding as birds that feed on the ground, such as doves and sparrows, cannot react quickly to a predator and may have no where to go.
