Just another amazing Fall day in Colorado to spend with the dogs!
Ever wonder what a day in the life of the dogs in boarding school looks like? Here’s a brief snapshot from today. A walk at the lake, a shopping trip for toys, and taking a break for lunch on the patio. Looks like fun and it is, but it’s also developing their calm in public, their self control in a distracting environment and preparing them for joining their families in all the fun of everyday life! #dogtrainingisfun #dog #dogsofinstagram #doglife #doglovers #coloradodogs #coloradodogtrainer #bouldercolorado #boulderdogtrainer #boulderdogs #louisvilleco #lafayettecolorado #eriecolorado #blackpawdogtraining
We have struggled with whether or not to share the following training story with you. Parts can be hard to watch. For those with a happy-go-lucky dog, it’s hard to understand why any dog would behave this way unless he’s being mistreated. We felt it was important to share for all those struggling with similar issues; a dog who bites, screams or thrashes, if asked to do anything he doesn’t want to do. These are dangerous dogs and their families often feel trapped, embarrassed, and fearful of their own dog. They don’t know how to handle the situation and many trainers and vets don’t either. They offer drugs or positive reinforcement training which often don’t work. We are sharing this story to help those people understand, help is available. Do your homework to find a trainer experienced with this type of behavior; extreme intolerance, lack of respect and aggression. Chance is a 20 month old neutered Shiba Inu adopted as a puppy by a caring family. Early on he showed signs of resource guarding and bit both of them with serious intent. Over the following months, he bit his family in many situations and several extended family members and friends with no apparent provocation. His behavior continued to escalate until they felt they could not have anyone over to their home due to his dangerous behavior. Chance also displayed aggression towards other dogs and would bark and snap if they came nearby. His family sought help from other trainers and a vet behaviorist. They were prescribed Prozac for Chance and three different sedatives for vet visits as he could not be safely handled by anyone. He would snap if anyone reached over his head to pet him or put a leash or harness on, if he was disturbed while eating, even if someone walked past him while food was being prepared. Chance had a hair trigger and would over react to many ordinary situations. They were desperate for help in finding a way to be able to keep Chance in their home. Here’s his story.

Meet Pepper. She’s like a lot of dogs that come to us for aggression rehab; insecure, fearful and acting out. She’s bitten both of her owners, their son, and a person who came near their car. She has struggled with guarding space and people at home and when taken for a walk, behaving very aggressively when seeing other people and dogs. And did I mention she had serious separation anxiety?! Frankly, her family was a little afraid of Pepper and they didn’t know where to begin to get control of her. When a dog is insecure and fearful, like Pepper, they need a confident handler to make them feel safe, show them better choices and advocate for them. Pepper had never really had a chance to socialize with other dogs and learn what normal behavior looks like. She was wound up, frustrated and fearful but under all that, is actually a really nice dog. Our job is to show her the way, make her feel safe and give her family the tools and techniques to gain control. After three weeks in our boarding school program, Pepper is ready to go home and make a fresh start!

Thank you for once again voting us Best Pet Supply store! We truly appreciate our amazing customers and all the support we have received over the past 14 years! You guys are the best!
These two beauties came all the way from Waco, Texas for a stay in our boarding school program! Wow! That is dedication! We applaud their family for their commitment to their dogs! Mack & Addy both had some typical husky issues when they arrived like not coming when called and separation anxiety, and some less common Husky issues like fear and nervousness of new situations and people. They have come so far both literally and figuratively! Welcome to the BlackPaw family guys!

Beautiful sight over the training center this morning!
Andy, a very big black Lab, came to use for extreme leash reactivity. He is in his third home and has injured two people by pulling them down while going bananas at another dog. Andy has done so well with his new training that we are now able to walk him WITHOUT a leash and maintain an awesome heel! Kudos to our very talented trainers Cecilia and Cait for all their hard work with this big guy! He goes home tomorrow and his family is in for a big treat on their first walk!
One of our graduates is looking for a new home. Ranger is a lovely one year old, 55 pound mixed breed, in great health, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. Ranger is fun and full of life, loves to play and is extremely well trained. He will be a great partner to some lucky person! We are glad to offer FREE follow up training for his new family to ease the transition into his new home and teach you all his skills. Ranger would do best in a family without children. Here is the note from his family: "We are sadly and reluctantly looking for a new home for Ranger, our 1-year-old dog. Ranger is very sweet and enjoys cuddling by the fire. He also loves to spend time outside – sunbathing on the porch and hiking in the mountains. We would love to keep Ranger forever, but he has a nervous temperament and is a poor fit for a family with children. We are therefore looking for an experienced dog owner – with a big heart – who can provide a calm home." If you are interested, please contact dorrit.schotz@gmail.com.

Meet Ranger! This super handsome fella came to use with a ton of anxiety which led to a lot of ugly behaviors like lunging and going after other dogs. After three weeks of intensive rehabilitation, he is going home a much more relaxed and confident dog. Ranger is now able to get out into the real world and enjoy people and places that were not an option prior to training. Way to go buddy! We are so proud of you!
Bluebell is living her best life, off leash and out skiiing in our beautiful Colorado mountains now that she’s BlackPaw trained! What a great team they make!
Look at that gorgeous face! Ridge is at our training center learning to come when he’s called and a whole lot more!
We love training dogs of all sizes, the littlest to the biggest and all sizes in between! This is Maizie. She’s an excitable pup that has struggled with barking at other dogs, not coming when called and pooping in her crate. With our boarding school program, Maizie is making fantastic progress and is charting a new course with her behavior to ensure many years more of love and fun with her family!
Training tip of the day - passive training! Passive training is whenever you ask your dog to do something, while you do something else. In this case, the dogs are staying on place while I clean out the horse paddock. Passive training builds patience, impulse control and helps your dog to develop the ability to stay in one place even if they can’t see you the whole time. It’s important to keep a close eye on them at first to ensure they are doing as told, holding them accountable if they break, and gradually increasing distance and duration as they get the hang of it. A patient dog who has the ability to wait is a pleasure to be around! Happy training!
Meet Andy! This lovely two year old Black Labrador is looking for a new home. He is fully trained by BlackPaw, is off-leash reliable, and will come with a lesson to help teach his new family all his "buttons." He will make a great addition to any family! This is from his current family: "We are devastated to have to let Andy go, but we are not able to currently care for him in the manner he requires and deserves. Andy is a loving, smart, playful, fun, affectionate and sensitive dog who deserves the best of lives. He has been responsive to his training in Denver, particularly that which he received at BlackPaw." For more info, please contact jakahler@icloud.com
