Hellebores!!! Great for any SHADE garden.
Tolerant of a wide range of growing conditions, hellebores perform best when sited in partial shade (sunrise until 2:00 pm) in rich, moist, but well-draining soil. Hellebores are quite easy to grow, and since they are perennials, will continue to bloom for a number of years.
February "To Do's"
Spring is just around the corner … are you ready?
Prune roses by mid-month (your Valentine’s Day To Do). Prune directly above an outward-facing bud. Completely remove (roots & all) Rose Rosette infected plants.

Did you have drainage issues last year? Don’t wait for the arrival of the next “monsoon” season to take action.
Plant trees and shrubs. It’s a great time to plant. Planting now gives your new plants plenty of time to establish a healthy root system before the next Texas summer. (Don’t forget the importance of hand watering during establishment – you cannot depend solely on your irrigation system.) Don’t forget your Root Stimulator!
Now is the time to transplant trees and shrubs that need to be moved. Remember “hole to hole” - don’t let freshly dug plants dry out in the sun awaiting re-planting.
Fertilize flowering annuals at least monthly … they are heavy feeders. And don’t forget those container plantings. Your winter perennials would also benefit from some high-nitrogen food.
MULCH, MULCH, MULCH. We recommend shredded wood mulch. Remember mulch serves both to insulate the root system and hold in valuable moisture. It also makes it harder for weeds to get a foothold. Mulch can prevent freeze damage to shallow root systems.
Prune trees, removing dead or damaged limbs while they are still easy to identify. Use of certified professionals will ensure proper pruning.
Prune Crape Myrtles but don’t be guilty of “crape murder” (topping).
It’s not too late to prune summer-flowering shrubs and vines. You can also shape evergreen shrubs.
Treat broad-leafed weeds in your turf with appropriate weed killers (follow label instructions).
Although spring is just around the corner, you still need to be prepared for freezing temperatures. Have your frost cloth ready to protect your tender plants. Need to wrap pipes or exposed irrigation equipment?
Watch out for scale insects. Early treatment with horticultural oil is a must.
Pre-emergent herbicide? Not yet! The rule of thumb is to apply 2-3 weeks prior to the last freeze (March 16-31 for the DFW metroplex).
