FYI...I wanted to share some info that we recently found out, the hard way.
Do you have an albuterol inhaler in your home? Purse? Bedside table? Car? Take note to keep these closed up/locked/out of reach of your dogs. If punctured, (as in chewed on), ALL of the medicine is immediately absorbed into their muscous membranes. It’s a vasodilator, causing their heart rate to increase & their blood pressure to drop. The dogs weight, and amount of doses left in the inhaler all considered, they can die in 5 min to a few hours. We believe we caught it early. She was lethargic, but her heart was racing, she couldn’t stand or focus clearly...
Our Cali Grace spent 24h in the ER, sedated on IV’s, and having her BP, pulse and blood toxins ckd every 2 hours. It wasn’t until 9-10 hours in, that we found out she would recover. She IS home resting.
Common sense says human meds don’t always cross over to pets. But, I never considered my inhaler would even be attractive to our dogs, let alone lethal. Lesson learned.
I hope this helps prevent someone else from going through this.

Whelp, I thought I was going to wait, but with the positivity rate of our rapid COVID tests going from 0% to 45% in less than a month, I took the opportunity to get vaccinated.
I got vaccinated to protect my myself, my family, my patients and everyone else, aka, my neighbor.
The shot was painless and I will return for my second as soon as I am able.
Thank you to Collin-Fannin County Medical Society and Kroger Pharmacy for making this day possible for so many healthcare providers!

On this National Women Physicians Day and for Black History Month, let me introduce, Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the first black woman to receive her Doctorate of Medicine in 1864!
I stand on the shoulders of strong, intelligent and caring women who allowed their faith and gifts to make room at a table once closed to them.
I am eternally grateful for their courage, persistence and sacrifice. Because of their legacy, I have been afforded an opportunity to create one of my own in the field of medicine.

Did you know that Phase 1B participants for the COVID Vaccine includes ANYONE 65y+ AND folks 16 yrs and over with 1 underlying health condition that puts them at higher risk for complications of COVID infection???
For those who would like to get the vaccine, please check with your local doctor's office and local county health department's website. My office does not currently have the capability to provide this particular vaccine, however mass vaccinations through the county health departments are gearing up quickly. Denton county administered 1000 doses today alone!

Fatigue, muscle aches and chills for 2 days after 2nd Moderna vaccine. It got my attention but did not keep me from working hard today! Now I am beginning to feel more like myself this evening. Still worth it in my opinion and would do it again!

As for me and my house (and family medicine practice), we will wear our masks.
Why?
Covid has not disappeared. It continues to claim over 2000 lives...DAILY. And now we have variants...
As of March 1, 2021 only 15% of the population have been fully vaccinated.
Removing the mask mandate undermines the effort to safely reopen schools 100%, putting both children and staff at risk.
Hospitals and long term care staff are already dealing with overcrowded facilities and high staff turnover due to infection and burnout.
Wearing a mask should never have been politicized, but sadly, it has been. Do not fall for it- all it will do is drive us apart and cause more chaos and confusion. I and my colleagues have seen first hand the ugliest sides of this disease. We have lost patients, family members and friends to COVID and cannot bear to loose any more.
Care for your neighbor as yourself and please wear your mask.
