Archaeologists will use any data or tool we can to learn about the past.....Even enlisting plants and trees to do our evil history-sniffing bidding!...lol :)
Besides daffodils, lilacs often mark old outhouses and lone apple trees often "tag" 1850's homesteads as most pioneer families tried to start a mini-orchard (the cause of some of the "Johnny Appleseed" lore).....
In northern Wisconsin, Wild Rice stands and blueberry groves are inseparable from Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) village sites.....
Remnant mini-stands of old growth white pine in the Northwods often mark burial areas like mounds, frontier/logger cemeteries or tribal burial grounds......As many of the earliest loggers were Native or Metis, they tended to avoid clear cutting in areas of obvious burial grounds.... This is a field lesson I learned from Menominee Tribal Historian David Grignon.....and 20 years of more fieldwork have proven his wisdom right....
Thanks Brian Schutzen for the link to the Daffodil article
