According to businessdictionary.com, Empowerment is defined as:
"A management practice of sharing information, rewards, and power with employees so that they can take initiative and make decisions to solve problems and improve service and performance. Empowerment is based on the idea that giving employees skills, resources, authority, opportunity, motivation, as well holding them responsible and accountable for outcomes of their actions, will contribute to their competence and satisfaction."
As an Executive coach, empowerment (or more precisely, a lack of) often comes up during my sessions with clients.
Perhaps its worth asking yourself:
"Have I been provided with what I need - the skills, resources, and authority - to achieve a successful outcome?"
Then, consider asking your management:
- do they feel they have provided you with what you need to achieve a successful outcome?
Finally, if you manage others, consider asking yourself:
Have I have truly provided my team with what they need to achieve a successful outcome?
