Once the gold standard for all the quintessential brands, jingles lost their luster in recent years as brands created hip soundtracks for their ads using pop tunes and moody classics.
But cool was never the objective with jingles. It was all about memorability. In fact, the hokier the jingle, the hookier it was, as repetition turned key messages into “earbugs”.
This Stanley Steemer ad from 2005 is near perfection for turning a low-interest, unsexy product into a household name. Bonus points for getting the phone number burned into consumers’ brains!
Look. In today’s digital world, brands are mostly playing it safe, developing creative that’s dictated by metrics. What could possibly be less creative? By their very musical nature, jingles are unique. And the best ones have instant recall decades later. (How many of us learned to spell bologna from Oscar Meyer?)
