COMMERCIAL TRUCKING & COVID-19: Reduced Trucking Regulations Increases Danger to Motoring Public 🚛🚗🚛
AUSTIN, Texas (July 12, 2020)- Earlier this year, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) waived hours of service safety regulations in response to critical supply shortages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. While the FMCSA's intent was to ensure the nation's supply chain kept up with demand, tired truck drivers have significantly increased the risk to passenger vehicles.
According to a search of data using TxDOT's CRIS Query, accidents involving Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMV) have risen sharply. In April 2020, Texas reported 2,113 CMV accidents, while 2,162 CMV collisions were recorded in May 2020. However, in June 2020, CMV accidents rose sharply, with a reported 2,524 collisions- an approximate 16.7% month over month increase from May to June.
"Truck drivers are tired; they are logging record miles under stressful conditions," noted Austin Personal Injury Attorney Brad Bonilla.
"Truck drivers have families and, like most of us, they're concerned about the health of family and finances. There's a lot of external factors that play into individual psyche. This is a type of distracted driving called cognitive distracted driving- and it is dangerous," explained Bonilla.
"In the current climate, there's a lot of pressure for truck drivers to drive further and faster to keep the supply chain moving. In June 2020, I was hired on several commercial truck wrecks caused by mental distractions, a trend which, unfortunately, appears likely to increase," concluded Bonilla.
