The IRS has delayed the deadline to file your income tax return and the date to pay your tax due to July 15th. New York State followed suit Friday morning. The IRS still encourages you if you are entitled to a refund to file now as returns are still being processed as normal.

As the year 2020 is (finally) ending, we wanted to pass along this bit of tax advice. Many people collected unemployment benefits for the first time in 2020. Those benefits are taxable as ordinary income for both Federal and New York State purposes. If you did receive benefits and did not have any taxes withheld, be aware that you may owe (or have a reduced refund) when you file your tax return.
