Conviction Overturned! In November 2016, the attorneys at Boustany Law Firm represented a 17-year-old who was charged with 2nd Degree Murder in Jefferson Davis Parish. After a multi-day jury trial, a divided jury convicted him of the lesser charge of manslaughter. He was sentenced to 20 years at hard labor. The attorneys felt that the State improperly admitted photographs at the trial which affected the jury’s decision.
The attorneys appealed the matter to the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal who affirmed the decision with one Judge dissenting. The attorneys disagreed with that decision. They appealed to the Louisiana Supreme Court. The Louisiana Supreme Court unanimously agreed with the Boustany Law Firm’s argument and remanded the matter to the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal. On July 3, 2019, the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal unanimously reversed the young man’s conviction.
