We had an absolute blast yesterday at our 1st Annual Office Olympics!! 🥇 Our 4 teams went head to head in an Egg Spoon Relay, Tic Tac Toe, Desk Chair Race, Drop the Penny, Hula Hoop Challenge and a Scavenger Hunt and it got a little competitive haha!! Everyone showed up head to toe in amazing costumes and came up with creative team names! Big shoutout to Sweet Cherry Bakery for making us some amazing Olympic themed cookies! 😍 Checkout our stories to see some highlights of the games!

Take a look at Gracyn’s smile transformation!! Gracyn was a very challenging case from the start. She had severe crowding and a vertical open bite pattern, with very thin tissue. We treated her with Damon metal braces for 2.5 years and carefully treatment planned this case. We knew that extractions could be needed to help with the diagnosis, but we were able to avoid extracting permanent teeth in the end. By utilizing very light forces in our copper titanium wires and very light force on our elastics we were able to achieve a fantastic result with very nice arch formation and overbite for guidance. Her smile arc is also very nicely positioned!

We are so flattered that our new patient, Chelsea, chose our office for her TAD treatment and is driving 5 hours from Maryland for her orthodontic treatment!!
TADs (Temporary Anchorage Devices) are small devices that are fixed to the bone that help lift the teeth upward. One of the ways we utilize TADs is to treat our patients who want to reduce their gummy smiles. Chelsea found our office through social media and loved some of the smile transformations from our former patients.

Our office will be closed the rest of the afternoon for training on our iCAT x-ray machine! Our new x-ray machine provides a short 4.8 second scan with a lower dose of radiation to reduce your exposure! With this 3D technology, Dr. Bo and Dr. Baker can see better visualization of the hard and soft tissues of the craniofacial structures, teeth, roots, TMJ, sinuses and tooth position in relation to other teeth!🦷

Smile Transformation alert...today we are featuring Dr. Bo’s daughter 😀 Ella Kate went through early intervention or Phase 1 treatment for severe crowding and underbite crossbite tendency. Early intervention means that orthodontic treatment is broken up into two phases or two sets of braces. Phase 1 treatment is completed before all permanent teeth have erupted and the purpose is to develop a child’s jaw so that teeth are not impacted and to improve their jaw alignment. This early correction can prevent later removal of permanent teeth. Dr. Bo and Dr. Baker used partial braces with early light elastics to help correct this underbite. Yes, you can use elastics in Phase I!! The results were amazing. We are now waiting for all permanent teeth to erupt in and provide comprehensive care.

Starting tomorrow Tuesday, Nov. 3rd, we are changing our check-in process. We will no longer have texting from the parking lot. Instead, we are now asking that all patients enter the lobby and check in with our front desk. In order to keep capacity down and prevent the spread of COVID, we are asking that all parents remain in your car unless you are completing a new patient exam or your child is under the age of 10 years.
When you arrive at the lobby...
1. Our team will check you in.
2. We will take your temperature and ask you to use hand sanitizer.
3. Chairs in our lobby will be spread out to be 6 ft apart.
4. If your child is completing an appt, you will receive an update on their treatment at the end of the appointment.
5. Our clinicians will schedule your child’s next appt at the chair.

Check out Ava's smile transformation! Ava was in treatment for 2 years with Damon metal braces. We strive to treat not just the smile, but the face when selecting our treatment plans and utilized a Herbst appliance during her treatment to correct her jaw discrepancy. The Herbst appliance is used when the upper jaw is too far forward compared to the lower jaw and replaces traditional headgear. As you can see the Herbst is a small stainless steel appliance affixed to permanent teeth on both sides in the back of the mouth and is not noticeable during treatment! Ava also finished her treatment with a laser gingivectomy procedure which uses a laser to remove gum tissue and shape the gums to reveal a broader, more even smile!
We have 3 more Bo Baker babies on the way so we had to break it down baby mama style! 😂👶🏼

The AAO recommends bringing your child in at age 7 for an orthodontic consult. We are very conservative with our treatment start times and most patients will start treatment around age 12 or 13. We like to check your child around age 7 to ensure there are no issues, such as impacted teeth, that may need early intervention or Phase 1 treatment. 😀

Transformation Thursday!! Take a look at Ali's smile transformation! It all starts with the end in mind. Orthodontics is as much about the artist/engineer as anything. Dr. Bo and Dr. Baker evaluated Ali's case and felt that her archform was too narrow and her smile was not broad enough. They felt that they could expand her smile in the posterior to fill in the corners of her mouth. They also wanted all the teeth to follow her lower lip line and not pronounce any particular tooth, but display a gradual step between the laterals and the canine. Generally bracket position can lead to prominent canines and Dr. Bo and Dr. Baker want the canines to be a very subtle tooth. In this case, they used Damon Clear braces to expand her arches by using titanium springs to bypass severely crowded teeth. The self-ligating Damon system allowed them to develop her archform rather than extracting healthy permanent teeth. Congrats Ali on your beautiful smile!

We love this video from the American Board of Orthodontics. Did you know that less than 30% of orthodontists are board certified? Dr. Bo and Dr. Baker are both board certified! This means they have completed peer-developed, written and clinical examinations and pursued additional, voluntary education and ongoing self-assessment. ABO Board Certification is renewed every 10 years and is a voluntary credential that represents an orthodontist's personal and public commitment to the standards of specialty practice and life-long learning.
Transformation Thursday!! Take a look at Ali's smile transformation! It all starts with the end in mind. Orthodontics is as much about the artist/engineer as anything. Dr. Bo and Dr. Baker evaluated Ali's case and felt that her archform was too narrow and her smile was not broad enough. They felt that they could expand her smile in the posterior to fill in the corners of her mouth. They also wanted all the teeth to follow her lower lip line and not pronounce any particular tooth, but display a gradual step between the laterals and the canine. Generally bracket position can lead to prominent canines and Dr. Bo and Dr. Baker want the canines to be a very subtle tooth. In this case, they used Damon Clear braces to expand her arches by using titanium springs to bypass severely crowded teeth. The self-ligating Damon system allowed them to develop her archform rather than extracting healthy permanent teeth. Congrats Ali on your beautiful smile!

With the opening of our lobby, we want to remind everyone that our lobby is open to patients only at this time. Check out Anam’s smile transformation! Anam underwent Phase I and Phase II treatment in our office for severe lower jaw retrusion. In Phase I of treatment, we utilized an Herbst appliance which encourages the growth of the lower jaw by holding it forward. Then in the second phase, Anam received Damon metal braces to finish her case with outstanding results. Check out her new smile and profile changes and how functional her bite is now!

This money was raised through generous donations from our patients that purchased our mascot, Seymour the Llama 🦙 If you are new to our office, our A Chance to Smile program allows children in foster care to receive free orthodontic treatment and we currently have 10 children receiving treatment right now 😊 We have adorable stuffed animal llamas in our office to hand out when you make a donation towards the program! It’s photoshoot time!! 📸 We are offering 6 complimentary photo sessions to our patients this spring with Callie Doty Photography and signups are on a first come, first serve basis! You must have recently finished treatment in our office or currently be in orthodontic treatment. All sessions will be held from 3:30-6:30 and patients will receive a 15 minute time slot. Select from the following dates: April 10th, April 18th, May 1st, May 23rd, June 5th or June 13th.

Check out Abbey's smile and arch transformation! Abbey underwent 15 months of treatment with Damon Clear braces. She began with arch width issues, causing a narrow arch and crossbite. We used passive, self-ligating clear braces to expand her smile and arch and create nice function! Can you tell the difference in how much broader her smile appears and how her arch expanded? Congrats Abbey!

She also developed a canted smile in which we placed TADs (temporary anchor devices) to help level out her smile. Her finished result has great function/guidance and her smile is incredible. It is all about the details in what we do!

Wow! Check out Shelby's progress and finished smile! Take a look at this impacted left canine. An impacted tooth is a tooth that has been blocked from breaking through the gum. Dr. Bo and Dr. Baker used their 3D x-ray machine to navigate this tooth into the correct position. With very light forces and self ligating Damon technology they were able to do multiple things early, such as rubber bands to correct her bite while they were retreiving the canine. Impacted teeth are a huge reason that we recommend that children have an orthodontic consultation starting at age 7 to check potential issues and sometimes prevent teeth from becoming impacted.
