Did you know that we can ultrasound pocket pets? Earlier this week Dr. Pearson and Lindy saw a guinea pig with a very large distended belly. Dr. Pearson had a hunch that this female guinea pig was about to be a mother. So, after the ultrasound confirmed her suspicion, we took an xray to count the babies. How many do you count? (Hint: A trick of the trade is to count skulls)

Recently Dr Pearson saw a bunny for a wellness exam. While checking the ears, she found that it had ear mites. "Their ears can harbor hundreds of these creepy crawlies. Could you imagine if these were in your ears?" She then explained that "When the infection gets bad enough, they can spread to different areas of the skin causing severe irritation. This is a perfect example of something that can be treated or even prevented with a trip to your vet. Exotics need medical care too". #exoticsneedthedoctoo

I couldn't just pick one picture, because this duo is just too cute!

Auggie Graduated!!! We are all ready for our lives to move on from the coronavirus, but did you know that cats have been battling a disease called FIP (feline infectious peritonitis) for a very long time, that is caused by a mutation of a different feline coronavirus? Up until recently, a diagnosis of FIP was pretty much a death sentence for a cat, and it most often affects young, otherwise healthy cats and kittens. Auggie is one of Dr. Domann's patients who was diagnosed with the “wet form” of FIP at under a year of age. He had a persistent high fever, high liver values, and the characteristic FIP fluid in his abdomen and chest when he was diagnosed. Previous medications and treatments had failed to help Auggie. He was so ill that he had completely stopped eating. The owners decided to take a chance, and start Auggie on an anti-viral treatment that is not yet commercially available, but has shown success in some preliminary trials and is starting to be used more and more on cats with FIP. It is a medication that is very similar to remdesivir, one of the medications that is being used to treat some people with COVID-19. The owners administered the injections daily for 84 days, along with a little bit of additional supportive treatment in the beginning. Within just a few days, Auggie was eating and fever-free, and the fluid in his chest and abdomen was starting to clear up! Unfortunately, Auggie and his family faced a big setback. After completing the 84 days of treatment, Auggie had a relapse of symptoms and developed a high fever within days of stopping the medication. The owners committed to 84 more days of the treatment at an increased dose, as this had been shown to be successful in many cats who had relapsed from the first round of treatment. Immediately after resuming the treatments, Auggie returned to health. It has now been OVER 6 MONTHS since Auggie finished his 2nd round of treatments, and his family is so happy that he is currently a happy, healthy, young cat. He is officially considered an “FIP graduate!”
