Developmental Milestones for Hearing in Children - Part 1. Stay tuned for Part 2. At Brainchild Institute, we come across many babies and toddlers with fluid in their ears. Language development is critical at this young age, and having fluid behind the ear drum causes hearing to sound quite muffled. Imagine being under water while listening to someone speak to you. An ENT must be involved immediately to address the fluid. Fluid in the middle ear space can sit there for months if action is not taken. Antibiotics treat ear infections, but not the fluid. Fluid behind the ear drum causes vestibular issues, developmental delays, and speech delays in children. Please share with new parents and professionals!
This client completed a combination program with us consisting of Integrated Listening Systems, Interactive Metronome (IM), and Dichotic Interaural Intensity Difference (DIID) training to address his Auditory Processing Disorders. We are devoted to #BuildingBetterBrains for brighter tomorrows!
Does your child have selective hearing? Maybe not. Kids who have trouble listening may have hidden hearing problems. A basic hearing test by a pediatric audiologist is the first step. If hearing is normal, testing to rule out an Auditory Processing Disorder may be next on the list. My child has waxy ears. How can I clean them? Ear wax actually serves a purpose. It traps dirt and small particles to protect our delicate eardrums. It even helps keep insects out of our ears! Yuck! Sometimes children (and adults) have a lot of earwax. When cleaning your child’s ears, use a warm, wet washcloth and wipe around the ear canal opening rather than using a Q-tip, which can clog the ear by pushing wax further down in the canal.
What is the best age to diagnose a hearing loss in a child? As young as possible!!! Babies usually have a special type of hearing test before they come home from the hospital. If your baby fails this test, you must get their hearing rechecked, preferably before they are 3 months old. The earlier a baby with hearing loss gets help, the better their chances are for developing speech and language.
Adults Can Have Auditory Processing Disorder Too! Do you feel like you have trouble understanding and remembering the things you hear? Do you ever feel so exhausted from listening that you are irritated or feel like just shutting down? You could be one of millions of adults living with Auditory Processing Disorder. https://www.brainchildinstitute.com/adults-can-have-auditory-processing-disorders-too/
My baby keeps pulling his ear. Does this mean anything? Usually if a baby keeps pulling the same ear, it means the ear is bothering them. This could be because they have wax clogging their ear but usually it is a sign that the baby has a middle ear problem (area behind the eardrum). Another sign is when the baby has scratches inside the ear. Always check with your pediatrician as soon as possible if you see any of these signs.
I am worried that my baby has taken too many antibiotics for ear infections, but he keeps getting them. Is there anything else I can do? One of the most common causes of middle ear infections is allergies, especially to cow’s milk. You may need to try out other types of milk or formula if allergies are suspected. Taking too many antibiotics can lead to resistant kinds of bacteria, so talk to you pediatrician about your concerns.
My baby drags one leg when she crawls. Should I be concerned? You should definitely pay attention here. A baby who drags one leg is showing signs of imbalance in the body which means an imbalance in the brain. Often, these kinds of imbalances can be corrected when they are caught early by addressing infantile reflexes (primary reflexes) that have not matured well. When the brain is more balanced, children learn easier and are less stressed in their development. See a professional with training in primary reflex integration.
My seven-month-old baby is very quiet and does not babble like her older sister did at this age. Should I be concerned? Quiet babies are a cause for concern. Yes, they may seem like “good” babies, but it is better for babies to be curious and making sounds to try to get their needs met. When babies are quiet, they may not be hearing well or receiving sounds clearly in the brain. See a pediatric audiologist if you have concerns, and always trust your gut instincts. The earlier we intervene when a baby’s milestones aren’t being met, the better their chances of success.
My doctor thinks my baby needs tubes in her ears because she has fluid behind her eardrums that won’t go away. I am afraid for my baby to have surgery. What should I do? Tubes in the ears, or pressure equalizing tubes, are often needed in children when their middle ear fluid won’t clear. Children who have this fluid present for months at a time cannot hear well and may be at risk for speech-language and learning delays. Balance problems can also result from middle ear fluid and can affect motor skills. The surgery is simple and quick, but it does require sedation. Nowadays, there is very little risk of problems with sedation, but parents should take precautions by discussing their concerns with their doctors.
