This week, Burger King shared a whole new look, complete with a new logo, new packaging, animated graphics and burger-inspired colors. Jones Knowles Ritchie (the creative agency behind the design) even developed a new, mouthwatering font called “Flame” so the fast-food burger empire could literally—wait for it—have it their way. As Lisa Smith, executive creative director at Jones Knowles Ritchie, says of the new font: “It looks a little bit squishy and delicious, so you can almost taste the typeface.” Now that’s delicious marketing. Are you hungry yet? 🍔

Earlier this month, GM released a new logo that’s gained them much acclaim—and criticism. Using a lowercase font, rounded edges and a color gradient of vibrant blue tones, the new look was designed to be more inclusive and evoke the clean skies of a “zero-emissions future” the brand is now working towards. While a noble ambition for the classic brand, critics of the rebrand think GM is ditching a century of history, brand trust, innovation and a logo associated with strong customer loyalty in favor of looking more hip and cool. What do you think?

We love inclusive marketing, so we were tickled pink when Crayola announced its "Colors of the World" crayons! This box of 24 crayons mirrors and represents over 40 different skin tones so kids can "accurately color themselves into the world." 👦🏽🥰 "With the world growing more diverse than ever before, Crayola hopes our new Colors of the World crayons will increase representation and foster a greater sense of belonging and acceptance," says Crayola CEO Rich Wuerthele. "We want the new Colors of the World crayons to advance inclusion within creativity and impact how kids express themselves." 🖍🤎

Did you hear? For the first time in 37 years, Budweiser won’t be running one of its always-memorable, in-game Super Bowl ads during the most-watched television event of the year. Instead, the powerhouse beer brand is exchanging brand awareness for COVID-19 vaccine awareness and distribution. 💉 The donation amount? The cost of a Super Bowl ad: millions of dollars. 💸 HERE 👏🏻 FOR 👏🏻 IT! 👏🏻

In honor of Black History Month, we want to highlight the late Georg Olden: an African American designer who pioneered the field of television graphics for his race and beyond. Throughout his impressive career, he supervised the identities of programs like I Love Lucy, Lassie and Gunsmoke as Head of On-Air promotions at CBS, became the first African American to design a postage stamp and even helped produce the vote-tallying scoreboard for the presidential election race between Dwight D. Eisenhower and Adlai E. Stevenson (the first televised presidential election in history). He was awarded seven Clio awards, as well as the esteemed American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Medal.
The power of a rebrand is amazing, isn't it? ⁣After 131 years, Aunt Jemima is out with a new look and a new name—Pearl Milling Company—named for the Missouri milling company that pioneered Aunt Jemima’s self-rising pancake mix. The brand first announced a change was coming in 2020, when the death of George Floyd sparked widespread protests over racial injustice and symbols of the Old South that still prevailed in modern society. With its slave-era depiction of the one-and-only Aunt Jemima on the front, the pancake brand fell right into the middle of the conflict. Out this week, Pearl Milling Company's new packaging kept the brand’s signature red, white and yellow color scheme, but replaced Aunt Jemima with a rendering of a mill and a water wheel. Both the pancake mix box and the syrup bottle say: “New Name, Same Great Taste | Aunt Jemima.” Proving its dedication to the cause, Pearl Milling Company has also made a $1 million commitment to empower and uplift Black girls and women.
When it comes to commercials, there is no bigger stage than the Super Bowl. So when Indeed and Guaranteed Rate paid millions of dollars for their ad spot and ended up using the same piece of stock footage, viewers noticed. (Stock film has become the norm for many big-name brands in the past year, as safety concerns related to the pandemic make it hard to get people together on a production set.) Spokespeople for both brands have confirmed the mishap and maintain that safety for their teams came first, their message remains the same regardless of the clip and, essentially, “stuff happens.” You tell us: Does seeing this clip in two different ads take away from the earnesty of the brand’s message? Or can the vendor-consumer community get past the snafu and understand the bigger picture?

Born in 1954 in Detroit, Michigan, Art Sims is an African American graphic designer and art director. He is founder and CEO of his own Los Angeles design firm, 11:24 Design Advertising, and has designed album covers for Columbia Records and posters for movies by Steven Spielberg and Spike Lee, including: The Color Purple, New Jack City, Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X and Bamboozled. Always paying homage to his culture, Art’s firm is dedicated to promoting African-American art and culture as part of a larger mandate for urbanization in general. As he says: “If I'm on this earth, I'm going to be doing something expressive, or creative, and I'm going to be giving back. You won't see Art Sims lying on the beach with a mint julep, pondering his life. There's too much to do.”

⁣Spelling faux pas… or win?! 💁🏻 When McDonald's previewed its new Crispy Chicken Sandwich with a limited number of orders on chkndrop.com, it sold out like hot cakes (er, Crispy Chicken Sandwiches). Enter Popeye's, who—banking on McDonald’s unique spelling choice and consumers’ probable spelling mistakes—bought 50 different URLs with different spellings they predicted people would land on when trying to access the deal. The first 10,000 customers who mistakenly landed on one of those 50 links? They got a free Popeyes Chicken Sandwich. 🍗 Our vote: Spelling (and marketing) win. 💡
Augmented reality gives brands an engaging and interactive way to connect with consumers, make their brand stand out and, quite literally, give life to their content. Once just a tool for gamers, marketing experts watched it thrive in ad campaigns and initiatives across major consumer industries in 2020—and our very own Lucho Escobar is all about it! Here’s a glimpse of one of the fun AR projects he’s been working on. So cool! 👏🏻
