Meet Ketchikan: it’s the unofficial Rain Capital of Alaska. Why would anyone visit a city with that moniker? Most want tropical paradise vacations, not rainy ones. Well, for all the adventurers out there, Ketchikan is the place to visit. The city contains one of the largest collections of totem poles in the United States. The nearby Tongass National Forest is home to hiking trails, and for fishermen the town offers numerous guided expeditions where you can catch King Salmon, Halibut, or any number of other species.
Perhaps most interesting is the town’s history. Founded in 1885 by a cannery agent, the coastal city calls itself the “Salmon Capital of the World” for its aquatic origins. Today, cruise ships visit it often on their way from Seattle to Juneau. In 2018, more than a million people stopped to peruse its attractions. You can also catch a short flight from Seattle if you want to stay longer to discover this southern Alaska gem.

Cruises are still going on in the U.S., believe it or not! This piece I ran across tells the fascinating story of what it's like to take a cruise during COVID. What makes it all the more interesting is that this cruise ship isn't massive: it's made for about 22 people, max.

You probably knew this already, but Columbus didn’t discover America. The Vikings did. U.S. historians realized this about 100 years ago and Wisconsin was the first state to celebrate Leif Erikson Day on October 9th. Eventually, in 1964, Congress made it a holiday. Historians believe Erikson visited Canada over 1000 years ago, more than 400 before Columbus ever sailed the ocean blue. So take a minute today to reflect on this and other historical events. Such facts can inspire conversation and foster connections!

Are airplanes safer that operating rooms? Some people think so. Equipped with high grade HEPA filters, some commercial airliners cycle air out much more frequently than either hospitals or your home. “Safe travels.”
What does that saying mean to you? For a lot of us, 2020 upended vacations, making them uncertain and unsafe. In cruise ships, COVID spread like wildfire early in the year. Lockdowns ensued and people stayed home.
For 2021, then, will “safe travels” exist? I think so. Here’s why.
