This is a replica of the Fort Sumter flag. In 1861, this flag was lowered after Confederates took the fort. 4 years later, after one of the darkest periods for the Republic, it was raised again in triumph over the forces of intolerance and hate.
Long may she fly. Long live the USA.

November 20, 1820 The Whaling Ship Essex was rammed & sunk by a sperm whale in the Pacific Ocean. 20 crew members escaped in 3 open boats but only 8 survived because the ship was sunk 2000 miles from the coast of South America.
Herman Melville's novel Moby Dick was inspired in part by the true story of the Essex.
