About

Bridgeview Diner is a real diner. The question has been asked many times. What, exactly, is the definition of a diner? for my own part, I have often stuck to the party line of 24 hour breakfast, or else I've offered some half-hearted claim that I know a diner when I see one, but to try to describe definite characteristics which make one restaurant a diner while another is not is somewhat difficult, to say the least. However, I'd like to make some attempt here to define (or perhaps interpret) what a diner is. For one thing, there are a number of characteristics which many diners share. Most are open 24 hours a day, or at least extremely late, and serve breakfast for the whole time. Most serve coffee (black as death) as a staple. Another typical characteristic is one of several themes: Hellenic, Neon '50's, or Abandoned Train Car. Fare ranges from American to Italian to Greek, but any diner will be able to give you cole slaw, pickles, some sorts of pastries, waffles, coffee (this point bears repeating), grilled cheese and so forth. Finally, typical diners have jukeboxes at tables, or somesuch. But, though these qualities can be found in many diners, there are some which possess few, or perhaps none, of them. It becomes rather tricky to say which of these attributes are strictly necessary to be a diner, and which are merely unexpected treats, turning an otherwise pleasant diner into a great one. Calling oneself a diner is insufficient However, despite the elaborate deceptions set up to beguile and confuse us, I think that a couple of things can be said with reasonable assurance. The first is that diners can be roughly divided into two type: The Suburban, and the Highway. The former is usually a restaurant which is open late (if not 24 hours), which caters to the old folks, or the high school kids, and, late at night, to the worst elements (such as my friends). The latter, however, is what the purists idealize when they talk of diners. They spring up to serve the needs of travelers and truckers; two groups which may need sustenance (and especially coffee) at any hour of day or night, and who can only survive the consumption of fast food for so long. Some purists, therefore, may consider only the Highway diner to be a true diner, but I have to disagree. While no doubt the call for Suburban diners is different than that of Highway diners, the reason is the same: People need somewhere cheap, bustling, good, and yes, even greasy, where they can meet, eat, talk, and so on. After all, who can go to a true diner and not people watch? A regrettable side effect of all of this is that the line between the Suburban diner and the family restaurant has been blurred, and as such, people sometimes can't tell the difference. In that case, remember: If you are in complete doubt, look for speckled formica, linoleum, stainless steel and moldy wood. Chances are, if you find all of them in the same eating establishment, you've found yourself a genuine diner. Congratulations to Bridgeview for being a true diner with quality service and amazing foods selection.

The last of a dying breed... After losing Vegas Diner and El Greco, this is one of the last traditional old-school diners around (at least that I know of)....

If you love ice cream, you're not alone. Most diners serve a variety of ice cream flavors, the better to tempt America's sweet tooth. Care to guess how many gallons of ice cream the average American eats in a year? That would be 3.4 gallons, the highest per capita consumption of ice cream in the world.

Balancing lunch and work can be difficult, and many are tempted to stay at their desks and partake of a working meal. However, multiple studies have shown that taking the time to leave your workspace and head to a diner or other eatery for lunch not only improves productivity, but also makes for a more enjoyable workday.
The first diner in America was established in 1872 by a man named Walter Scott. He worked at a printing press and sold food to his co-workers out of his horse drawn wagon!

Sadly, the great American dessert apple pie did not originate in the USA along with baseball and hot dogs. There are extant recipes for apple pie dating all the way back to the Chaucerian world in the 1300s.
Even though the very first diner was probably a horse drawn wagon, prefabricated, freestanding buildings soon followed. Originally, the idea was to make dining a fast, convenient process for working folk. Think of the classic diner as the precursor to our modern "fast food on every corner" mentality.
The first ‘diner’ was created in 1917. The Jerry O’Mahony Diner Company of Elizabeth, New Jersey, created 2,000 diners between 1917 and 1952. There are still about 20 original O’Mahony designs in use today, including a 1942 “Miss America” stainless steel classic residing in Jersey City, New Jersey!

When was the last time you went out to dinner at a diner? If all you expect is breakfast food and burgers, then you’re in for a pleasant surprise. You’ll be able to enjoy dinners like steak and potatoes, broiled fish, fried shrimp, or even lasagna in a great friendly atmosphere.
Diners in the 1950s served a lot of comfort food. They were the types of meals you might find on American tables during Sunday dinner. Here are some common examples: pork chops, meatloaf, spaghetti and meatballs, tuna casserole, macaroni and cheese, omelets, and apple pie.
Diners have a language all their own, which can vary from place to place. Some of the more colorful diner slang sometimes baffles patrons, like "burn one, take it through the garden, and pin a rose on it" (a grilled hamburger with lettuce, tomato, and onion), but the terms are a quick way for waitstaff and cooks to communicate.
The first diner started business back in 1872, but it may have looked a bit more like a modern food cart than a restaurant-style eating establishment. The first "diner" was actually a horse-drawn wagon positioned outside a Rhode Island newspaper to take advantage of mealtime walk-up business.
The Moondance Diner was a famous Big Apple landmark for decades. It was showcased in the ‘Spider Man’ movies as well as the show, ‘Sex and the City’ and ‘Friends.’ It was sold in 2007 and hauled 2400 miles west to Wyoming.
Although high end restaurants typically offer alcoholic beverages, most diners and other casual family focused eateries don't. Care to guess what percent of the adult U.S. population doesn't drink alcohol? That would be 33 percent or one in three.
Since diners are known for serving a variety of dishes all day, they’re a great chance to combine different food styles. For example, you could enjoy a rich, savory dinner, then follow it up with breakfast food like a waffle with ice cream on top.
The birth of the American diner actually occurred in 1872, when entrepreneur Walter Scott of Providence, Rhode Island, modified a horse-pulled wagon to serve such fare as sandwiches, boiled eggs, pies, and coffee. Similar businesses soon cropped up both locally and as far away as Massachusetts.
Here is a sad statistic – about 25 percent of the American population eats breakfast in their cars every day. We say it is time to put an end to this travesty; stop in for a visit, and enjoy your Adam and Eve on a raft in the comfort of our restaurant.
