Each month we recognize and celebrate a teacher who exemplifies our HEART principals here at Bright Horizons. The HEART principals are Honesty, Excellence, Accountability, Respect, and Teamwork. These are core tenets to what it means to be a Bright Horizons educator . For the month of October we are celebrating Miss Mckayla! Miss Mckayla is a new addition to our center, but has embraced the HEART principals and inspires us every day with her resilience, respect, honesty. Miss Mckayla can be found in our Preschool pod, and in Preschool 1. She has jumped into the role and formed incredible relationships with the friends in that class and embraced the team here at BH@Portland. We want to show our support and appreciation for Miss Mckayla and have awarded her the key to success for October. Please join me in celebrating her on this achievement.

Each month one of our halls is transformed into a space where we can celebrate each other. In this area all anniversaries, birthdays, and the recipients of our weekly Key to Success is posted. There is the chance for us to celebrate each other in the center by writing notes, and signing cards. Usually this is also a place where families can celebrate with us and add their own words. Due to our enhanced protocols this celebration has moved to our Facebook page. Please join us here celebrating the incredible educators who make this center what it is! The last day of the month its taken down to prepare for the next months celebrations. Thank you for joining us in celebrating these events throughout the month. See you all in October!

Due to our enhanced protocols families may not be able to come into our center, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still share our high quality learning spaces with you! This video is the second in a series of classroom tours. We welcome you inside of our classrooms and programs to see where the learning happens! Even with these enhanced protocols our classrooms are held to our high BH standards, NAEYC (National Association of Young Children) Standards, and of course our licensing standards. Our next look is at our Preschool Program. The teachers in our Preschool Pod, that include preschool 1 and 2, are Miss Mela and Mckayla in Preschool 1 and Miss Kayla in Preschool 2. In the tour below we see Miss Kayla’s preschool 2 classroom. She did an amazing job covering the different areas of the classroom and their purpose.

At BH@Portland, we enjoy coming together for celebrations. Through these events, we build relationships, grow our communities, recognize milestones, and create shared memories. And, we know these types of experiences are sorely missed right now. At this time of year, many begin thinking of fall holidays like Halloween. This year we will not be hosting any Halloween celebrations. This decision was made considering our unwavering commitments to health and safety; creating inclusive communities; and providing developmentally appropriate experiences in our classrooms. Instead of traditional Halloween festivities, at our center we plan to celebrate the season with a pajama day! Please join us and dress in your favorite pajamas as we celebrate together. We look forward to seeing you on the 30th in those cozy PJs!
Happy Election Day everyone! Here at BH@Portland we live by our HEART principals inside and out. One of those principals are RESPECT. In our preschool classrooms this means everyone’s ideas and feelings matter. Another is TEAMWORK We are all capable thinkers. We appreciate what makes us unique and different. We cheer each other on and celebrate our success. In our Preschool 2 classroom our friends are living by those principals by learning about their duty of voting! We may not have been voting for president, but that doesn't mean its not important to practice. Voting is an empowering way to make our voices heard.

In honor of Native American Heritage Month we have added a variety of materials to help us become more aware of the cultures and history of the first peoples on this nations. In Preschool 2 students read a variety of stories, use Mohawk letter blocks to see some of the variety of different letters and marks, and used materials to participate in basket weaving and other developmentally appropriate activities to help us become more aware of the diversity of our world. Engaging and helping our students understand the diversity of cultures and peoples early on leads to a greater understanding of the larger world we are apart of. We celebrate these cultures and peoples all year round as a core part of our Towards a Better World curriculum.

In 1976, President Gerald R. Ford asked Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans” with an official holiday each February. The annual tradition has continued ever since. Today Black History Month is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans and remember the important role blacks have played in American history. At Bright Horizons, we also see this time as one opportunity to promote kindness, peace, unity, and inclusion. Our Diversity and Inclusion team worked hard to create this display in our preschool hallway in order to help support our teachers in implementing and learning about about these incredible individuals in our classrooms.
