This month, in collaboration with the Smithsonian, we're bringing the museum into our classrooms at Bright Horizons through Smithsonian Discoveries! Children will explore three collections: Beautiful Things, Favorite Treasures, and Natural Objects! The kindergarten prep classroom started with natural objects. In one activity, they examined various gemstones and then practiced writing the names of the stone in their journal.
Our kinder prep class explored the concept of a graph last week! One graph they made was about what kind of shoes they were wearing. Children got to draw their shoes on the sign in chart. All of the drawings were used as data for the graph. Once they'd collected the data, they graphed how many friends had each kind of shoe. They used every day math terms like "more", "less", "most", and "least" to describe the results.
