Infants are very attentive to sounds and are especially interested in cause and effect. Allowing them to explore instruments, including real instruments with a variety of textures and sounds helps them to build awareness.
The beginning of dramatic play with infants starts with self-awareness: seeing yourself in a mirror and eventually realizing that is you. Mirrors are a great way to help babies explore. They may even reach out to touch the “baby” in the mirror. Eventually, they will learn they are seeing their own face and start to recognize their reflection.

The children in the preschool classroom learned about dream catchers and where they originated before taking time to create their own. Dream catchers were designed to "catch" evil spirits, tangle them up, before they could enter your dreams. They were made with an open weave so the good dreams could get through. Good Dreams: The Ojibwa believed that good dreams are light as air. Good dreams can wander gently through the night, and make their way down to a sleeping child, through the feathers and twigs of a dream catcher. Bad Dreams: But there is nothing gentle about a bad dream. Bad dreams are violent and rambunctious. They plunge about in the night air, and dart down towards a sleeping baby. The dream catchers catches them in its web. The bad dreams are tangled in the catcher. There they stay, trapped, until morning, when the sun rises and sends them away.
Visual art for babies is a total sensory experience of smearing, patting, poking, and moving with their whole bodies. The Infant toddler one used texture balls to explore art today.
The toddler children take a moment to sit in their chairs and examine the logs set up to mimic a camp fire. Children learn best by using their 5 senses.

The art of writing does not always have to be taught with paper and pencil. By offering repeated fun experiences with a variety of art and writing materials children develop the skills they need to be successful.
Long before they can write, children learn that writing is important. Children begin to understand that writing communicates a message. Scribbling, mock writing, and drawing pictures are the starting points of a child's efforts to write. Fostering children's efforts to write begins with the print-rich environment. Children need to see written language everywhere and have opportunities to produce their own in scribbles, pictures, and invented letters. During curriculum time children take time to practice the skill of writing.

Dramatic (pretend) play helps children make sense of their world. Either by themselves or with others, children play different people, animal and fantasy roles, act out books or movies, talk through puppets, put on costumes and outfits, use props to represent different items, and reenact what they have experienced, seen or heard. While trying different roles children uninhibitedly express their feelings and advance anguage and social skills. As children imitate and negotiate roles and explore characters and themes, they work through distressing or confusing issues, develop sequential thinking, experience social cues (including cause and effect), and learn to appreciate different perspectives. Most importantly, they have fun!

We know that babies’ brains are growing fast, and that the brain develops as it responds to streams of input coming from the baby’s surroundings, through the senses of touch, smell, taste, hearing, sight and bodily movement. The Treasure Basket gathers together and provides a focus for a rich variety of everyday objects chosen to offer stimulus to these senses. The use of the Treasure Basket is one way that we can ensure a richness in the baby’s experiences when the brain is ready to receive, to make connections and so to make use of this information.

Garden Works primarily grows out of three curricular elements of The World at Their Fingertips: Science Rocks, Well Aware, and Toward a Better World. Science learning opportunities abound within gardening projects. Children learn about the cycle of life, what it takes to nurture a plant, and so much more. Similarly, health and wellness learning is embedded throughout Garden Works as children sample new vegetables they have never tried. Garden Works also touches on the many concepts that are part of Toward a Better World — a focus on making the world a more sustainable place.
