This year in Primary we have started a new student leadership group called the Worry Warriors. This is a group of volunteers who recognize that their peers might need some help navigating their feelings in this new normal. This group will be learning about emotions and ways to calm ourselves down and cope with our worries. We will then be starting to come up with our own coping techniques and sharing these with the rest of Primary at assemblies later this year. Our first task this week was using Global Campus to learn about managing our feelings using one of the new ‘Elements’ which are uploaded monthly. We will then explore the different ideas on the Global Campus ‘Wellbeing’ section all about yoga, workouts and healthy cooking ideas. We can’t wait to start sharing our ideas and sharing our feelings!

In our new Civics class for Year 7, students focus on world religions, how governments and countries are organized, and the US constitution. This lesson focused on “debate skills” and how to develop debate arguments. Students are practicing debates using structured formats and persuasive language.

Year 12s Chloe and Natalie are leading #BISCSL #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek to raise awareness and provide education of mental illness. “In these unprecedented times, taking care of our own mental health is essential. Spending so much time on screens can be extremely difficult, and the unknown nature of the future can be overwhelming. This week will consist of a different activity every day, such as learning coping skills and virtual assemblies. This year's #NordAngliaEducation Visual Arts Competition will be launching on November 1, and we're asking students to represent their interpretation of climate change, a topic that lends itself to a variety of media and creative methods. We have no doubt, from previous years' entries, that our students will rise to the occasion and produce some more phenomenal work.
We will again be working with UNICEF to judge the entries, and hope to once again exhibit the winning pieces at the UN next year.

They chose the name to emphasize the importance of wanting to understand more about others' circumstances regardless of the ability to identify with them. Year 3 have been learning about William Smith and how he was able to use rocks and fossils to make the first geological map of Britain. They put their learning into practice today while using sand, gravel, soil, and bottled water to make mini lakes. They discovered that the sedimentary rocks would separate into layers just like William Smith said they did, with the heavier sediment at the bottom and the lighter sediment at the top. Year 3 rocks!

A few weeks ago we put out a call for Year 10 students who were looking for service hours and/or who wanted a creative project. The students created artwork for children served by Humble Design Chicago. The results were really impressive! Thanks to Casey, Claire and Owen for getting things started! This will be an ongoing project for high school students. Please contact Beni C. (Year 12) or Owen G. (Year 10) if you would like details on participating.
Humble Design is a non-profit organization that provides furnishing for apartments--everything from furniture to kitchen appliances to art on the walls--for families, veterans, and other individuals coming out of homelessness. They work with families to personalize their spaces by getting to know their background, favorite colors and themes. As a part of the personalization, every child receives a piece of artwork with their name.

This is what hard work. Perseverance. Struggle. Accomplishment looks like. We needed some good news this year, and we just got it. I've been bursting to share, but waited until Neha was ready. She is going to Northwestern in the Fall - her DREAM school. Congrats to my amazing girl! She's ready to ROCK it and man, she looks good in purple! And, we. cannot forget that in large part it was possible because of the INCREDIBLE foundation from the amazing British International School of Chicago - South Loop - one of the best schools - I'm convinced - in the city and beyond. We love the faculty and the focus on developing global citizens - why we ended up there and stayed. Thank you to them and everyone that supported our kiddo in her journey.

The Chicago Help Initiative (CHI) in supporting their mission to reduce food insecurity for Chicago’s homeless communities, particularly during Covid. CHI and volunteer partners currently provide approximately 3500 bagged meals a week to shelters and other partners who assist Chicago’s homeless community. In addition, CHI provides a weekly hot meal, medical, mental health, job search, and other important services to these communities.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a day to honor the civil rights crusader and is also a great time to teach kids about his life and what the Nobel Peace Prize winner stood for.

Three of our Year 10 students, Karys, Claire, and Adriano entered the University of Illinois-Chicago's Annual High School German Day. Karys and Claire entered the poetry reading competition, whilst Adriano created an advert for why learning German is fun. Karys placed 4th out of 20 entries in her category - a massive achievement considering the students were up against students in Year 12 and Year 13. Well done!

What a spirited competition our Primary students had today with Pi day activities. We were amazed by Year 5 Aamir who was able to memorize and recite the first 110 digits of π . This would rank in 911 place of the World ranking and 324 in the US ranking. Also, great job by Year 6 Jack who wasn't far behind with 101.

Today, Year 3 learned about the properties of materials in Science by testing the absorbency of different types of materials. We learned how to conduct a fair test by keeping the amount of water the same and the size of the material the same and changing only the type of material. We added St. Patrick’s Day flair by adding some green food coloring to the water!

In this year’s #NAEMIT Challenge Mission Moxie, Year 7 students submitted questions to MIT relating to the Moxie experiment, which is one of the many experiments onboard the Perseverance Rover currently exploring Mars. This particular experiment breaks down carbon dioxide taken from Mars’ atmosphere into oxygen, which is an important step forward in humans traveling to Mars in the future. Thousands of questions from Nord Anglia students were submitted to the team of MIT scientists involved in Moxie, and our very own Year 7 Charlotte’s question was selected and answered.
