Right now is prime time for tick exposure! Especially with all the wet weather we have been experiencing. Lyme disease is the most commonly reported tick-borne disease reported in the US. Make sure your pet is protected with flea/tick prevention as well as an up-to-date Lyme vaccine for our canine friends. Tips for prevention of Lyme disease: In dogs- 1. Flea/tick prevention such as Frontline Gold, Nexgard or Bravecto. 2. Brush dogs frequently during tick season and perform thorough tick checks. 3. If you find an attached tick, remove it promptly with tweezers and without crushing the tick. Contact veterinarian if you have any concerns. In humans – 1. Be aware of high tick exposure areas. 2. Wear light colored clothing to help you spot and remove ticks before they attach. 3. Wear long sleeved shirt tucked into pants with pants tucked into socks. 4. Conduct frequent, full body tick checks

The winter season can be tough on pet’s paws. Wipe or clean paws after walks to remove salt, antifreeze, or other chemicals which can be harmful if ingested. Toe pads can get encrusted with snow, salt, and ice, which can make paw pads sore and walking painful. Carefully trim fur between dog toe pads. Consider using dog booties to protect your pup’s paws; just make sure the fit is correct and do short walks with plenty of treats for encouragement until your dog gets used to wearing them.

Animals can get frostbite too! This occurs when part of the body freezes from prolonged exposure to cold. Frostbite tends to involve the tail, ear tips, and pads of the feet. These parts are the most exposed and less protected by fur. Frostbitten skin is pale white or blue. As circulation returns, it becomes red and swollen and may begin to peel. Eventually it looks black as the tissue dies. Dead skin and tissue separates from the body in one to three weeks. If you think your pet has suffered frostbite, call your veterinarian. Do not rub or massage the affected areas and handle them carefully.
