Virginia Onnen has lived at Brookdale Gaines Ranch for almost 12 years and has loved every minute of it. She makes friends easily and is very active in the community. She recently lost her beloved pet dog Gus, but now has a tiny bundle of fur named Gus #4. She said one of the best things about Brookdale is that she has all of her meals cooked for her! She has traveled internationally most of her life. When she was 27 years old, she was sent to Saudi Arabia. It was there that she learned to do ceramics, not by the locals, but by reading books about the wheel throwing and hand-building techniques. She loved having a studio to work in and having it available any time she wanted. She made this large owl in Beirut. Since we have a kiln on property here, she can still participate in the craft she loves.

She has hiked the world, including in Switzerland, but her favorite place is a special lake in Colorado. When her friend learned how to do the art of Pysanky (egg decorating with dyes and wax), she really wanted to learn. She said she is not an artistic person, but can follow instructions and patterns exactly. Her technical skills are apparent in her beautiful eggs. She uses them to gift them to people who are sick, down in the dumps, or just need a gift of love.
