It's a standing ovation for one of Brookdale's finest!
Noel has worked for Brookdale Shadow Hills on and off since 2013. His duties include resident assistant, Med. Tech, health and wellness coordinator, and much more. For the past 3 years, Noel has been going to school to be an administrator for skilled nursing facilities. He received a Bachelor of Science in healthcare management. This December he will graduate with a Masters in Healthcare Administration. Last week Noel took his state test, already passing his Nationals, and he passed to become a licensed nursing facility administrator. Noel will be venturing out to the Arlington area to start a brand-new life soon. Our Brookdale Shadow Hills staff wish him the very best and remind him not to forget the little people. We are all so very proud of you!

Today was resident Emma's day. Emma brought out her lovely birdhouses she used to make and gave us the history and detailed instructions on how she made them. She shared a box of unfinished pieces with other residents to create with during art class. We watched creative videos on the iPad that showed elaborate fairy homes, so residents could get inspired. What fun it is watching minds of different ages create from imagination.
Brookdale Shadow Hills "All American Burgers" drive-by turned out delicious. Robert, sales & marketing, handed out full hamburger meals in our courtyard to the healthcare professional community that drove by for lunch. The fall season can be seen at Brookdale Shadow Hills community.
Our residents enjoyed an unusual snack and a history lesson on the "Flutternutter" sandwich. We like to find the oddest things to read about and research especially when it involves a good snack.
Residents and staff honored Don for stepping into our clergy position during Sunday church services. Don is a retired Chaplin and has become such a leader in our community. This month we celebrate "National Clergy Day". Don also runs the "Life Story" program for the resident programs director. This group enjoyed talking and reminiscing about what happened around their dinner table as a child. Each Saturday afternoon brings an interesting topic for all to share.
We are proud to be named #1 in Customer Satisfaction in Assisted Living/Memory Care in the J.D. Power 2020 U.S. Senior Living Satisfaction Study. This honor is a testament to the resilience and dedication of our teams. http://bkd.co/6184p8vmY
"How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our military heroes."
"Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it...it flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it and those who live to remember." - Unknown
Happy Veteran's Day to Brookdale Shadow Hills honored military residents, JC, Don, Bob and Richard (not shown).
We Love you and Thank you for your service.
Thank you to our local Home Health Agency and our Hospice Agencies who helped us with this celebration through this difficult time.
This month our community wanted to spotlight resident Ruth's ageless inspiration.
We asked Ruth, "What spiritual or religious practices have helped you to relieve anxiety throughout your life?"
Ruth replied, "Psalm 56:3 'What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee'. When I was 8 years old this was our vacation bible school memory verse. I memorized it but didn't apply it to my life for many years. Then as an adult serving as a missionary in Liberia West Africa, I was asked to serve as a Life Service Band Leader to students who shared the faith in nearby villages. To reach these villages we had to cross the Po River on a monkey bridge made of 3 pieces of bamboo tied together. This scripture suddenly came to mind. Every Sunday, I spoke this scripture to ease myself while crossing that bridge. In our world today, I still use this verse to calm my heart."

Today we celebrated "Nacho Day!" Ever wonder who invented nachos? Well, residents read a little history about the invention of nachos and the connection to WWII during lunch. Our kitchen crew did a good job on the meal. Plates were loaded.
National Activities Professional Week!
Celebrate with love and acknowledgment, these individuals are dedicated in serving their residents and staff.
A little dish of joy each day.
It's "National Activities Professional Week" January 24th - 30th. Do something kind or send a special note of thanks to your Activity Professionals/Program Directors to let them know what a great job they're doing by enriching the lives of others. During the pandemic, their jobs have all increased so much, not only physically but emotionally and mentally. These are individuals with many hats, brave hearts, and strong souls.
Sunshine can come in different forms. It can be a beautiful sunny day, it can be singing to someone, "You are my sunshine!" or it can come from your kindness and gentle touch.
Won't you be someone's sunshine today!
Celebrating National Cheese Day with a menagerie of cheese products to fill the afternoon munchies. Gary thought it represented "cheese" for a photo opportunity.
Residents enjoyed a popcorn treat, individual small bottles of wine, and a bag of 12 green grapes to bring in the New Year.
When clocks strike midnight on New Year's Eve, in Spain and parts of Latin America, many revelers are too busy to pop champagne, set off fireworks, or kiss their spouse. Instead, they're stuffing 12 green grapes in their mouths — an attempt to ward off bad luck in the New Year. 12 lucky grapes, a tradition from the early 1900s.
So this year we chose popcorn instead of fireworks, wine instead of champagne, tooter whistles instead of kissing to bring in the New Year, along with history, fun facts, traditions, and health benefits.
Happy New Year! Here's hoping the New Year brings good health, happiness, and better understanding to all.
