Just to change things up a bit and make our routine walk club a little more interesting, we had a nature hunt. Residents shared a few laughs & enjoyed searching for signs of autumn, and even found a few extras along the way!
Wanda W., pictured here with her late husband, Max, is a relatively new Vista Grande resident, but she's quickly adjusted to her new life here. Although she was born in Glenwood Springs, Wanda considers herself a Colorado Springs native, having lived here almost her entire life. Among her childhood memories here in the Springs, one stands out: Throughout the 1950s, she spent a lot of time skating at the Broadmoor Skating Arena. Often, she found herself right alongside Olympian champions. Before marrying Max, Wanda spent two years in college, studying business. She went on to spend 34 years in various Civil Service and civilian roles, including executive secretary. Max and Wanda, who had two children, were married 64 years before the sad day of his passing. Wanda has adapted easily and seamlessly here, making many friends and being an active part of the community. We are so happy we were lucky enough to have this wonderful lady join us here at Vista Grande!
These lovely ladies had fun making some super cute autumn crafts that were super simple to do! They did a great job! The end result? Mini pumpkins and corn made only from pipe cleaners and beads. 😊 They all agreed this craft is a keeper. 😉
Vista Grande resident, Gene, is so amazing and such an active part of our community! He is not only our local librarian & Bingo caller, but also our local gardener! We are so lucky to have him. Thank you for all you do Gene!
Gratitude is Ageless Campaign is September 21st! Residents decided they wanted to send thank you notes and words of encouragement to all those who sent letters to them when this pandemic first started, as well as to members at local churches. 😊 💞
Residents are grateful to have small groups again! They are enjoying not only small group afternoon walks, but also Crosswords, Flex Your Brain, and Trivia (some of their favorites!) Pictured here is Betty, Doreen, and Mitsu.

After spending more than 50 of resident Cleta's 83 years working tirelessly for right-to-life causes, she has earned some time to rest! In 2018, Cleta was honored with the Father Bill Carmody Life Champion "Wilson Award" based on her half-century of devoted work. Anyone who has entered Cleta's apartment has most likely seen the yellow Wilson's volleyball, which represents her Life Champion honor. While spending all those years advocating for others, she also raised a family of her own, along with her now-deceased husband, Herman. Cleta was born and raised in Texas where she met Herman at a bowling alley. They would joke that they met in "the gutter." They had four children together and those four children gave them six grandchildren. In 1994, the couple moved here to Colorado Springs. Not long after Herman's passing in 2018, Cleta moved into her apartment here at Vista Grande. Now, she enjoys walks, playing Bingo, and sharing her smile with anyone she meets! Cleta is an important and joyful part of our community, and we're happy she chose to live here with us!
Esther, a housekeeper here at Brookdale Vista Grande, learned long ago the accuracy of the quote: "Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing." - Theodore Roosevelt. She's always enjoyed cleaning, a skill, and passion she acquired from her mother. She's held other positions, including 15 years as a Certified Nurse's Assistant, but cleaning is what she especially enjoys. This mother of six and grandmother of 16 has worked at Vista Grande for just six months but has already been recognized as an employee of the month! Her colleagues appreciate her daily devotion to the job, and the residents love her devotion to their well-being. Esther spent her childhood years in Texas and later lived in Arizona, Idaho, and Oregon before moving to Colorado. Colorado has been her home for 28 years now. When away from the job, Esther adores her boyfriend, Jose, and her blind, diabetic little Shih Tzu dog, Tron, and, of course, cleaning her own home! We are so very happy to have her here with us!
Walking to end Alzheimer’s 2020! COVID couldn’t stop this wonderful cause! Our team still raised money and walked in our local neighborhood. We walked almost a mile and received lots of support from passerbys with honks and waves. It was a great day!
Alzheimer’s Walk 2020! We had a great group of us that walked in our neighborhood to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association and awareness for this disease! We also honored those that fought and continue to fight Alzheimer’s! We also received lots of support from people passing by with waves and honks!

Virtual Family & Friends Trivia Event! For our Social Connectedness celebration, residents and their families were able to join together for a Family Feud and Name That Tune style trivia event via Zoom. Sales and Resident Programs partnered together and split residents into teams. Each resident was then, of course, paired on the same team as their family. Residents were thrilled to see and interact with family and all that participated had a great time!
We enjoyed some FUN at our Halloween Costume Contest; we even had families join us via Zoom. Our dining team was amazing and made some very delicious Halloween snacks & punch that residents loved! Everyone also received bags with candy, hand sanitizer, pens, pencils, notepads, and magnets. Thank you to our awesome dining staff and all who participated to make this so great! If you’re wondering 😉...1st place was a Princess, who joined via Zoom, 2nd place was our very own resident Gary (Eagle) and 3rd was associate, Lakisha (Wonder Woman)
Wishing you all a safe, spooky, and spectacular Halloween!
Residents, Jacque and Mitsu partnered together to run Hallway B-Fit! They did an amazing job! Thank you to both of these wonderful ladies! We are so happy to have you as part of our Vista Grande family! 😍
When Bill and Louise began considering senior living options for Bill's sister, Pam, the availability of the COVID-19 vaccine became a major point of interest for their next steps. Now, after receiving the vaccine and transitioning to her new community, Pam is an official resident of Brookdale Cary.

Residents at Vista Grande look forward to playing Bingo three times a week. Winners earn tickets that can be used to buy items at the Resident General Store. So many people play, and in order to be socially distanced, we had to spread out into two rooms! Resident Programs Assistant, Sue, calls Bingo through the intercom system to accommodate! ☺️ Pictured here are Sue and just a few of our loyal Bingo players, Sam, Sharon, and Mitsu.
One of our dining room servers, Mercedes, has gotten her COVID-19 vaccine. She did it to protect everyone around her!
