Denise isn’t only an awesome Brookdale associate, she’s also a sommelier with over 20 years of experience in the field of wine tasting and wine-making. This week, our residents had the privilege of attending a wine tasting event led by Denise, in which they not only learned from her about the art of wine-making and how to best choose and enjoy great wine, but they also got to taste four wines from around the world specifically chosen by Denise for their unique complexity and great value. Each attendee even received a card for taking notes about the wines she introduced and to rank them in their order of preference. Big cheers to Denise for sharing her passion and for living the Brookdale mission of enriching the lives of those we serve!
Go, Team, Go! Residents and associates all repped their favorite team colors! While there certainly were lots of great teams represented, we have to say that it sure looked like our own hometown UT Longhorns were by far the most popular!
A Night at the Symphony. The Austin Symphony delivered their season opener via online streaming, much to the delight of our many music lovers and season ticket holders. We made it a special evening for them with wine, chocolate covered strawberries, and candlelight. The performance was spectacular, and one of our season ticket holders even said that she preferred the virtual experience over going to the actual symphony because, as she put it, “For once, I didn’t have to climb over anyone to get to my seat and no one had to climb over me!"
Bobbie’s grandson was getting married in Colorado, and since she wasn’t able to travel to attend the wedding, we worked with her family to make sure she could attend virtually via Zoom. An escort, a corsage, a mini-version of the wedding cake, a beautiful dress, candlelight, and a great internet connection helped Bobbie feel like she was there in person. She even got to greet the bride and groom after the ceremony!
Our “Virtual Summer Vacation” culminated with a trip to intriguing India, complete with special Indian appetizers, beverages, lovely decor, photo ops at the Taj Mahal, and even beautiful bindi for all the ladies to wear. What a fun way to end our summer world travel adventures!
“Oohs” and “aahs” could be heard throughout the community as Suzie modeled a beautiful Japanese yukata (summer kimono) during our Virtual Summer Vacation Japanese Happy Hour. Suzie showed the exact way to wear the full outfit including the obi (belt) and shoes. Everyone was amazed and delighted to see her beautiful outfit!

Happy Halloween 2020!
Today's fall pumpkin decorating workshop was a great reminder that creativity is truly ageless and...you're never too old to have fun with some googly eyes and yarn!
Yesterday was National Women & Girls in Sports Day, and we celebrated it by honoring one of our residents. Coach D. is a nationally renowned volleyball coach, so we surprised her with a group Zoom call with some of her former players, including an Olympian and 2 All Americans. The players told stories and expressed appreciation for her work with them including leading some of them to a national collegiate championship. With a big smile on her face and pride in her voice, Coach D then introduced her players to her Brookdale Westlake Hills friends and neighbors. It was truly a memorable way to celebrate the day!

You’re never too old to play in the dirt! We had so much fun creating beautiful terrariums for our “Creating with Nature” workshop. Each resident selected the live plants and décor to create their own unique designs. The results were amazing! Everyone was delighted to have these little “gardens in a bowl” to add a touch of beauty to their homes.
The CDC strongly recommends the COVID-19 vaccine and it’s so important that as many people as possible get vaccinated. We will be having our second vaccine clinics on Tuesday, January 26 and Thursday, January 28 from 10am - 4pm for community residents and associates who are interested in receiving their first or second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Getting vaccinated will help protect you, your friends, family and other members of your community.
