Happy Birthday to Buckeye EcoCare's Certified Arborist, Brian Huber! We hope you have a great day!
October Weather Alert
All perennial plants, including turf, require water to sustain growth and maintain health. The normal Ohio rainfall total for the month of September is 2.5 inches.
Only .90 inches of rain were recorded for the entire month of September at the Dayton International Airport. Along with this precipitation deficit, the 14 day forecast is not showing any chance of significant rain. This is great news for the farmers harvesting their crops but bad news for homeowners with lawns and landscapes.
Our recommendations are the same as they were in July - do not cut your lawn unless you have irrigated turf. Please water your evergreen trees and shrubs as well as any grass seed you may have planted this fall.
The older, more mature turfgrass plants that have gone dormant will survive any kind of winter Mother Nature has in store for them. The grass at our building probably looks similar to yours!
Last month was definitely NOT a September to remember!
NATIONAL FAMILY DAY
The fourth Monday in September is National Family Day. We'd love to see a photo of your family!
It's a beautiful day! Enjoy the sunshine, mild temperatures and fresh air!
Water your evergreens!
Spruce, pine, arborvitae and other evergreen trees continue to require adequate moisture throughout fall and early winter. September and October are often dry months with below average rainfall. While deciduous trees begin to shed their foliage, evergreens continue to require sufficient moisture to retain needle growth and maintain healthy, hydrated roots.
All plants should continue to be watered throughout the fall, concentrating on maintaining adequate soil moisture for your evergreens. Water now for healthy, green trees next year!
Another beautiful hydroseeding job by Team Buckeye. Well done, Tom Grunkemeyer and Mike Davis!
Happy birthday to our very own Tim Garrett! We hope you have a wonderful birthday weekend!
Those bugs you've probably been seeing that look like flying daddy longlegs aren’t mosquitoes. They are crane flies, and the average life span of an adult crane fly is three to five days.
Crane flies won’t bite you, so they are virtually harmless to humans. Their larvae will feed in the fall and winter months before heading underground in the summer to avoid the heat and dry conditions…and then reemerge next fall.
The best way to keep crane flies away from your house is to rake up fallen leaves on your property, because decaying leaves are a tasty treat for these pesky bugs.
And that’s the buzz about crane flies!
Please help us give a birthday shoutout to Don Duritsch from our Vandalia branch. Don, we hope you have a great birthday!
Now is the time to prepare your landscape for winter! During the fall, as many landscape plants move toward their dormant season, clean up and sanitation of your landscape is an important step in reducing disease-causing pathogens that may infect plants next spring.
• Remove annual plants both above and below the ground.
• Prune back dead stems and foliage of most perennial plants. Any perennials planted in the fall should be watered well and covered with a layer of mulch in late fall to help prevent the plant from heaving from the soil during freezing and thawing cycles.
• All narrow leaf evergreens (pines, spruces and junipers) and broadleaf evergreens (boxwoods and hollies) should be well-watered before the ground freezes to reduce the chances of "winter burn" of the foliage.
A little late-season gardening now will help ensure a good start for your landscape next spring!
Happy Birthday to our very own Lisa Grunkemeyer! We hope you have a fantastic day!
